I understand that they are trying to get the population under control. I haven't seen any numbers on this years buck/doe season harvest, but was curious, if we continue to hunt for both during the 2 week season and continue this for another season or two, is it going to get the number of buck to doe ratio in balance and eliminate the need for this early season??

I don't think so Pops. Unless we knock the over winter doe population below what is considered the density that is best for the deer. And if we kill off more does that the current science says is appropiate, we will hear it big time from the animal rights groups. Science and the need to conrol deer numbers through harvests is what allows hunting. Our deer density goals are all based on after hunting season, over winter numbers.

BTB, I thought maybe a new survey was completed.

Terry...yes I did. PArticipated in a boar hunt as well. Spears and Xbows. Interesting.

Use your history knowledge Terry. Modern recurves do nothing that a Korean composite bow, or the old turkish bows haven't done for years. About the only thing that modern technology has accomplished is making them last longer. Compounds are another animal...and technology I believe is getting out of hand.....but they STILL are not even close to a Xbow.

Also....thumb releases and rope releases were around long before our modern archery seasons. Heck...I shoot a rope/bead release with my recurve now and then. I got it off of a manual from the middle east. Its history predates us.

Bottom line...the argument of how a Xbow doesn't shoot like folks claim...is boguss. They shoot far different than a compound.

A crossbow is more a short range gun than a bow. It is held, aimed and shot like a gun. It's performance on game becomes very questionable past 30 yards but it still resembles a gun more than a bow to me.
pigs with spears Ralph? Sounds like fun<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

mhogan,

I assumed that, I guess I was thinking that we have to be taking more deer during the 2 week season than we have in the past buck only and 3 days of doe. How many Deer are they looking to take during the October Doe season?? If they don't increase the number of tags for doe, how is this going to make any difference if they are taken in October or December?? (I understand the thinking of eliminating prior to the rut) I guess I just think that at some point we have to hit this magic number no matter when we take the deer.

Another thought comes to mind. Is the amount of doe taken in the October gun hunt going to be enough to offset the deer that aren't taken during the Archery season. If there is a rifle hunt in October, the deer are going to be hiding for some time, thus making the Archery harvest much less than it would have been without the Gun hunt.

Thoughts??

The un-official word that has leaked out of Harrisburg is that our harvest will be pretty close to last years numbers. Maybe a little less. So up to 300,000 doe and up to 200,000 bucks.

Archers don't seem to be able to take over 40,000 does. They want to get from 37 to 21 DPFSM in Pa. They need to take 350,000 to get a decreasing herd size. We will just hold steady at 300,000 like we took. So I'd bet they would like to take at least 100,000 pre-rut. They will spook them into cover in some areas and hurt the bowhunter. No doubt in my mind. Lot of negatives in the program for the bowhunter. People seem to think we bowhunters are getting a golden goose with Alt's plans. One speaker said we everything we are getting, we should be willing to give up that two weeks in November as our contrabution to the program. You know, save them good bucks for the mating. Actaully for them to shoot in rifle season. Just hunt does then, he suggested. I figure he was wearing a vest so I let him walk. But anyhow, the flintlockers only took 8000 does last year. I don't know about this year yet. Hopefully better or they will put more modern rifles in.

BT how do I load that short ranged gun.....er, I meant crossbow. i've tried several times but that dang thing just will not keep a 270 case on the rail. and when i get it to stay on there that darn string of mine just won't do a thing to the primer. i went thru two boxes of Remington Core Locks and they all were duds!!!
But I got a shaft to fire that same rail!!
