Mass Muzzleloader
Anybody been out yet and if so, any luck?
I got out for the last hour yesterday, w/ no luck. Spoke w/ the land owner and he said he has been seeing 2 nice doe and a spike quite a bit. I am hoping to get a shot at one of them. It is the same spike I missed w/ the bow... i am still bitter. He had better not come by w/ the TC in my hand! Heading out tomorrow for the day... we'll see. |

RE: Mass Muzzleloader
Went out this morning and didn't see a thing. Was out in the Poutwater WMA. Found some signs but no deer. I took Monday off from work to go out one more time. Monday is my last shot in Mass unfortunately, going to be busy and traveling the next 2 weekends.
I hope I see something on Monday. If anyone wants to give me a honey hole to try on Monday feel free to PM me;). |
RE: Mass Muzzleloader
Well happy to say I got on on Monday! It was the first Mass deer I have seen since the archery season. But I have hunted every day since and haven't been blessed with the presents of another one. Good luck.

RE: Mass Muzzleloader
Hey folks I just killed the biggest deer I have ever got in my life ist a 9 point with great mass and excellent palimation. I think it will go well over 200 lbs. I don't even own a camera anymore as I drowned my digital camera in the river so I'm going to go buy a throw away. I have toi wait until 1200 to check it in as Reedies don't open till then. Just goes to show you keep at it right till the end. I knew there was a big doe and a skipper still in there but I never thought this guy was in there. I got it off the same stand I got the button buck last Monday. Seems like Mondays are my days. I'll post later tonight If I'm sober caus I'm gonna have a few tonight. If not I'll post tomorow

RE: Mass Muzzleloader
Thanks folks! I will take some photos tomorow I got a little wasted last night celibrating don't ya know. I don't understand how something can make you feel so good at night and the next morning make you wish you were dead. Anyway I'm alive and mostly well now. I checked him in at reedys in Middleboro and he weighed 190 and they rough scored him at 135-140.
He almost snuck behind me something made me turn around just as he hit the thickest stuff in the woods I put the Omega up and followed him as best I could with the buckmaster scope. He hit a small opening like a window and I touched off. I could't see anything but smoke. When the smoke cleared there was nothing there. I got out of my treestand 20 min latter no hair or blood followed his tracks for about 50 yards and there he was. When I saw him I had to sit down or fall down. What a rack. anyway I hit him in the back stomac the sockwave traveled to the liver and made half of it Jelly and dead center of the heart. but no blood no hair I can't figure that out. Any way I will psot photos when I get them thanks again Mike |
RE: Mass Muzzleloader
I know the feeling Mike! Congrats...You had to go from that horrible feeling after finding no hair & blood to the top of the world. I can't wait to see the pics. Congrats again!

Any way if you would like to see it go to the gun teams and see team 1. Now thats what a good Mass deer looks like. My next question how do I get it scored I called the North East big buck club and of course they never answered my message. any other suggestions.

RE: Mass Muzzleloader
I guess some of youdidn't see this in the muzzle loader thread
Posts: 920 Joined: 1/22/2004 Status: online I had to work till 1 Am and when the alarm went off at 5 Am. I shut it off and rolled over and said heck with it I'm too tierd. My buddie called me at 5:45 asking what happened to me I told him I had to work late and was just too tierd. He told me that if I didn't get right down there he was going to climb into my stand and shoot the big boy thats been running around there just to piss me off. Well I figured I'm awake and if he ever did that I woulden't be able to live with myself. I had been hunting the same stand ever since the muzzle loader season opened. I haden't seen the big buck since last year when he got by me not once but twice, once during the shotgun season and once during the muzzloader. I thought he must still be around cause no one else hunts in this area and I haden't heard of anyone hitting him with a car. So up I rose and threw my clothes on and out the door. I got to the area about 6:15 and my buddie said I figured that woud get you up. To my suprise hacking John was there a ( well I'll be nice) not nice guy who trys to follow people around who are getting deer. Hacking John can ruin a spot quick He coughes constantly with a smoke hanging out of his mouth, he stinks and can't sit still. He found out I shot a button buck opening day and has been looking for where my truck has been parked ever sence. Now the area I hunt is real small and it don't take a wonderer long to ruin it. As most folks know during the late muzzle loader season you have to be real quit sneak into your stand and sneak back out as the deer have been hunted so hard they spook easy and if you spook them out of these little pockets of woods you may not see them till next year. So I said to my buddie I should have stayed in bed this spot is done. We were both pretty bummed but we were there and it was late so in we went. My stand is all the way in almost to the other side and this is the only way in and out so I have to be real slow and quite. I got to my stand about 6:40 climbed up and hooked up my saftey belt and settled in. My stand is a real comfortable API fixed position with a swivel seat and I have a cables shooting rail so I can take my best shot. Only thing is the rail can double as a head rest and if your not careful you will drift off to sleep which is wat I found myself doing so I stood up trying to shoke off the sleepy feeling. I was watching the area where the field and the woods meet as this is where every deer I have seen in the area have been. Somthing made me turn around behind me and as I did I saw a buck heading into the thickest cover around. I raised my Omega and found him in the buckmaster scope but it was so thick I knew I coulden't take a shot I followed him the best I could in the scope. All of a sudden I hit an open area and squeezed the trigger. For about 20 seconds all I could see was smoke, I quickly reloaded and as I did the smoke cleared. I looked and didn't see the deer there and never saw him go anywhere. I looked through the scope still nothing. I figured that the way he was going there was nothing but houses there and he would eather run back or cross the street but the way I had been hearing cars on the street in their early morning rush to work I thought his best bet would be to come back. After about 20 min. he hadden.t come back so I figured I would go down and see if there was any blood or hair. I got to the area where he was when I shot and I could see big tracks in the ground and I thought I could see where the bullet scraped and entered the ground. Nothing no hair no blood nothing but tracks. I followed for about 30 feet or so still nothing. I figured I must have missed but it was a quick off hand shot and tough to make any way at least I tried. I followed the tracks anyway figuring I'd see what direction he went in and still hoping . As I broke through the thick stuff I saw something I said to myself no thats too big to be a deer it must be a stump or something but as I broke out of the thick stuffI was in I saw it was a deer and what a deer I went over to him saw the horns and had to sit down if I didn't I was going to fall down. He was a big body deer and the groth of the antlers was amazing the polimation was huge he had 4 points on one side and 5 on the other. Again not the tallest rack and not the widest I ever saw but over all huge especially with that polmation it looks like a crown. It drew quite a crowd at Reedys where I checked it in at first the guy told me the scale was broke but when he came out to check it in the scale all of a sudden was working again. The deer weighed 190 lbs which is not giant body size but still a good size deer and I was told he would have gone 230 to 240 before the rut. And he was rough scored about 140. When I get some pictures taken I will post them up. So guys I hope that story didn't bore you too much I could never tell a good short story it always takes me too long. |
RE: Mass Muzzleloader

Supposedly, someone shot a real freak in Cummington. Rumor has it it was a 20 something pointer. It was checked at Dave's Sporting Goods in Pittsfield. I will see what I can find out and see how true it is.

RE: Mass Muzzleloader
Man What A Season I'm Having!!!!!!
I went out yesturday and was in my stand Same stand I shot 2 deer this muzzleloader season. Well about 9:00am I saw a cat trying to sneak up on some small birds. I put the scope on the cat and thought to my self I ought to (I hade cats and love birds) but of course I didn't. I was lowering the gun when I caught movement to my left. About 30 yards out was a huge doe walking I put the scope just behind her sholder and touched off. there was enough of a breeze blowing that it took the smoke away right away. As she ran away I saw blood qushing out from where I aimed. I was reloading as quick as I could but not soon enough as a smaller doe bounded as I was pushing the bullet down the barrel. After about 5 min I got out of the stand and followed a blood trail Little Steve Wonder could have followed for about 40 yards and there she was dead. I said to myself this has got to be a world record record doe or at least a state record. As I got ready to to dress the deer I said wait this ain't no doe and I checked the head and sure enough to huge soars where 2 antlers were. I was told the big one I got in there last week was not the big boy of the area, but every time you shoot a big deer you hear that so I sluffed it off. But I got to tell you that deer weighed almost 230 lbs and the sores were 3 inches around. So on sunday I'm going to start a new huntings season and try to find those sheds. The area I have been hunting is only 40 ac. so if he lost them in there I'll find them if I have to step on every square in of land there. Cause if he's bigger then the one I got last week imagin the size of the antlers I'm looking for. |
RE: Mass Muzzleloader
congrats mike ,again what a season yoiur having wish mine was somthuing to talk about[:@]but ill be out tommrow and saturday, good luck on finding those sheds ,love to see a pic. of them;)

RE: Mass Muzzleloader
Listen can you hear that, Oh there it is again. I know what it is. Its the fat lady she is singing away.
I hope every one hadd a great hunting season and I hope everyone had an even better one next year. If I find those sheds I will post a photo. I'm having it caped out anyway if I down't find the sheds I hav a real pretty 8 that I shot in Bridgewater 3 years ago and should have had mounted I didn't because I already had a huge 8 pointer being done and I coulden't afford both. But I would still like to fine the sheds and mount them where they belong. |
RE: Mass Muzzleloader
Congrats Mike... i hope you find the sheds!
