Bow only here. But if I ever got a place to gun hunt, well maybe I could be persuaded especially witha ML.

I USED to look forward to gun season, but now I see it as the end of bowhunting. Once it starts, there's 7 straight weekends of guns going off and the deer run to their hiding places, and stay there. I hunt with a bow during all the deer seasons which only makes it harder, but I don't mind that as much as the fact that the deer will be skittish for the rest of the season.

At least, that's how it is around here.

I will be taking the first week off to hunt in Frederick County. Yahoo!

RE: Shotgun MD

Like Dave, I prefer to hunt with bow on the majority of days that I spend in the woods, however, I will pull out the shotgun and BP rifles when the season comes around in a week. The good thing for me is that I have one piece of property that is strictly bow (unless poachers come on), so the deer on that land shouldn't get too skittish come the gun season.

One thing I hate about the gun season here in Harford County, is that the woods become FILLED with people and a lot of the time they don't even have permission to be where they are. [:@]

I'll be over off penn shop road. I drive a 96 white ford f250 extended cab. If you see me in the woods you can't miss me. I am 6'3" 33olbs. Stop me and say hello.

Deerwhisperer I went to google maps cause I wanted to see what part of the woods Penn Shop road would dump you off in. It looks like Penn Shop dumps you off at Long Corner Road. I've been over to Long Corner I think once and saw deer. But never got around to going over there scouting. Or do you actually park on Penn Shop road? If so I'll have to venture over there sometime.

I do not know the name of the road excactly. But my friend who introduced me to this place says if i keep walking straight through the woods it will come out at browns church road.
Now i have walked in there quite along ways, further than i care to normally, but i did not reach the other side. But i have seen others in there that did not park where i did and i justassumed they came in from browns church area.
I will look at the roads more closely saturday and post back the name.

Well if you and your buddy have a desire to do a drive sometime in that area, let me know and I'll get my two friends and we'll have more guys moving. The three of us tried a drive during muzzleloader and we learned that we need to have a guy posted out in front to intercept the deer running straight away. The more the merrier I guess. Let me know. :D

DW,

Is that public land? My sister lives in Ijamsville and I travel Penn shop and Browns Church all of the time. I have no idea where this land is if it is public.

Saxman1819 11-20-2006 12:14 PM

RE: Shotgun MD

It is public land. Just go to the end of browns church where it dead ends and you'll see Corn fields on both sides of the road and that is where you park. Also look for the rotting deer carcasses from the poachers and slobs that just dump them there.[:@]

Like some of the other guys I am primarily a bow hunter. I get less and less excited about shotgun season every year. This year however I just purchased a scope for my .44 mag and I plan on taking that out for gun season. I am actually getting pretty excited about Saturday and I really look forward to taking a deer with the hand cannon.:D:D

I'm sorry. I meant Bethesda Church Road. Anyway, I found Brown Church Road on the map. Do you need a permit to hunt the Park? Can you use a shotgun/muzzleloader? Thanks.

Saxman1819 11-20-2006 02:34 PM

RE: Shotgun MD

No permit other than your license is needed to hunt there. And you can use shotgun/muzzleloader.

Well if you know where penn shop road is and your coming from 70, you will turn left onto penn shop. When you get to the circle bare to the right then you will come to a Y, bare to the right again. Then follow the road till you come to a river, or stream which ever you want to call it and park. On weekends you will see allkinds of cars parked. On weekdays there is hardly anyone there. This side of the creek is howard county and the other side is Montgomery county. You can hunt either side of the creek and either side of the road. To get to browns church road do not turn left on penn shop but keep going straight and you will see it on the left.
I will be pretty busy the 1st week of hunting, but maybe Me, you and saxman could meet up on browns church 1 day during the week onthe 2nd week. hunt browns church in the morning and check out the otherside in the afternoon. Whoever does not get a deer, buys the beer.

How far is the area you guys are talking about from Frederick? I have Monday and Tues off but have no one to hunt with. If you guys arn't that far away maybe I could swing down and join ya.

RE: Shotgun MD

I agree. All this talk about the Public Land down there, I was starting to think that I might as well brave the ride and meet some MD people from HNI.:D Even though I REALLY want to stick with the bow this Saturday, I think that it will be good to get the ML back out again for the opener. It kicks a lot less than my 3" sabot shooting 12 ga. fully-rifled barrel Remington... but that will see some action next week.;)

I hear ya Hammy. The slug barrel for my Encore likes the Winchester Supreme Partition Golds. They're $3 a shot and even the 2-3/4 slugs kick like a mule! But, they do give me 2" groups at 100 yards. :)

I really want to stick with my bow to get a deer for the contest but I am leaning towards taking out my ML for Saturday. I'm game for meeting up next Friday if you guys are.

Wow. Two and a half days left in the firearms season and not much activity going on in Maryland? I've been working a lot so I haven't had time during the week to get out, but nothing at all? Not even good bow takedowns during the season of the orange army? I might head out with the bow tomorrow morning, even with the full moon, and will def. be out with the ML Saturday from about 10A until dark.

I'm still amazed at the lack of posts though. That just means more deer for the rest of the bow only season (minus the ML and 2 day SG).:D

I have to say I am totally disgusted with my results this year. Either I was always in the wrong spot or I had other hunters screwing up my hunts. I hunt a friend's property and we even had someone in one of our ladder stands on opening day! I wanted to go over and give him **** but I kept thinking about that Vietnamese guy in Wisconsin. He was gone by 7:30am but it just amazes me what people do these days. [:@]

I have put away all of my stuff due to selling my house. I will be looking forward to next year.

I'm giving it a go tomorrow, wind or no wind. With the 3/4 moon, I am not getting on stand at O'dark thirty, but plan to be up and settled in by 11 at the latest. Hoping I can take something with the ML as I have been held scoreless all season (too much work and no play).

Anyone else going (gun or bow)? Good luck. I'm feeling lucky! ;)

Went to Meade yesterday morning, saw 7 deer, two of which were 4 pointers, 3 does, and two tails. I had to adjust where I set up due to not seeingbut a glimpse of one deer a long way offon opening morning. I've been there 4 times, first time I saw 8, second time 1, third 1, then 7.

Maybe I'm getting old now, but I have yet to break down and shoot a doe as I always have in the past when I didn't see a decent buck. This will likely be the first year in about 15 where I didn't get one, but I have truly enjoyed it as well or more thanany of the others.

Rick,

I have had two encounters with other hunters in my life and both times we both had weapons in our hands. Both times myself, and the other hunter have been hot. Both times I realized that it could end in a bad way and calmed myself and the other guy down so that we could walk away. This time I thought before I reacted and decided the safe way was not to confront the guy at 6am. When I looked over at 7:30, he was gone. He must have known he got caught and left after I walked the other way. If it was during the daytime, I would call my friend over and we would both approach the guy from different angles to talk to him.

I don't care how people try to justify it, confronting someone over stuff like this isn't worth dying over. I have had a gun in my face. I have been shot at. I have been stabbed. People may talk like Barney Badass but until it happens to you, you have no idea what it feels like. (That wasn't meant as negative towards your comment. Just a fact.) It pissed me off that he was in our stand. It just wasn't the right time to confront him about it.

Peace

G2, not taken negatively and I agree, it's not worth dieing over or getting injured over either. You know better than anyonehow you will react when confronting or approching a tresspasser. You want to educate him, not confront him.It can be done in a professional manner to minimize the possability of a confrontation or a simple cell phone call to DNR could take it all together out of your hands. Have yourweapon slung over your shoilder upside downwhen approching himand speak politely. At the first sign of aggressionbe it in his voice orother signsdepart the area. But he has to know he has infringed. If you know where he parked a note might better serve that point as well. Be sure to copy his tag # too;).
