RE: Maryland Junior Deer Hunt Day
Hey Wirehair and everybody else, I took my son on the youth hunt on Saturday and he got his first deer! It was a 124 pound 3-point.
Here's the story:
The morning was a bust. We had gotten to the stand a lot later than I'd hoped, and then had trouble getting set up. Lot's of noise. We headed in for lunch an then out to a new stand location. There was a really deep thicket across from a large beanfield. We set up along the edge of the thicket and an access road. It was a two-person permanent stand, so we got ourselves ready, and then prayed for success. That was around 1pm. We quietly went over strategy. You know, if one comes out over here, shoot this way, etc.. We say another couple of hunters on the other side of the beanfield...a testament to wearing your hunter orange, so I told Jakethesnake to be careful about shooting in that direction.
Then at around 10 'til 2pm, my son said "Let's be quiet now." He was in charge it seemed! So I complied. Five minutes later, he tapped me on the shoulder and said "there's a deer." I slowly leaned over to see. It had just popped up out of a thicket and was looking around. It still amazes me how quiet they are. We didn't hear it coming, and all the sudden it was there.
Anyway, he walked behind a bush and Jakethesnake quietly brought the shotgun to bear, waiting for a shot. I was whispering "patience, patience..," then when a good quartering-away vital shot was presented, he dropped the hammer.
It was not a perfect shot, but it was a vitals shot. He was excited and shaking like a leaf. I told him "safety your gun!" After we climbed down, I had him wait the longest 10 minutes of his life, and then we began tracking. About an hour later, he had his deer. Under instruction, he field-dressed it himself. It's hanging in the Rod & Gun club cooler right now!
