DE Shotgun Sound Off

Well we are just 10 or so hours away. Big NorEaster blowin in on Saturday so I'll be making a day of it tomorrow. It'll be warm after the sun rises, but its opening day! They'll be people in the woods moving them deer around and with the upcoming storm, they should be moving on their own anyhow.

I've hunted deer here in Delaware since 97 and the only season opener that stunk was last year. It had been warm for a while then. I have a feeling it will be better this year. We'll see.

Good Luck to all, be safe and respectful, and post results here.

Got a nice fat Doe at 8:30am. Four came by and I stopped them with a mouth grunt 20 yds from the stand. All broadside. I shot the biggest one. About 90lbs dressed. Couldn't get that shot in 2 1/2 months of bow hunting :). Oh well. I'll take it.

Funniest thing was. After I shot the Deer, the other 3 just stood there. One actually walked up and sniffed the dead Deer. They just walked on like nothing happened. I could have easily killed another one, but one a day is enough for me. I also figured I give them a chance to make it through the 1st day. Well five minutes after they walked out of sight to the next farm, I heard a barrage of gunfire. I figure they are all dead now.

5 minutes before I shot the Deer, a male Bald Eagle flew over the stand about 80 yds up. I've never seen one in the wild before. Pretty neat. Just a great day all in all.

I'll be out again Monday. I'm taking the Bow though. Now that there's meat in the freezer, back to something a little more of a challenge. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

How'd everyone else make out?

Scott - did you hunt a private farm or public land? If public, where at? Hell, if private, where's your farm located?

I was hunting a private farm in Smyrna. I sub lease a stand. After the 1st week of gun, it dies out quick, but its good for Bow and opening week. Last year, no one got a deer out of it. Its hit and miss. This was just one of those good years I guess.

Monday my father and I drew stands at Woodland Beach WMA. My dad drew a refuge stand so he'll hunt there all day. I'll head back to the leased stand in the morning and Hunt the stand I drew in the afternoon.

There was a ton of shooting this morning all around. Im assuming 1-800- WETLAND was pretty busy this morning. :).

Any bucks around? NJ is buck only and then goes mental with about 15 either-sex days and 20 muzzle days.

Ron,

I heard shooting down your way and was thinking about you. Glad to hear you guys did well. Keep it up! I'll be back out Monday.

I'm looking out the window at all this wind and rain. Alot of miserable deer hunters out there now I think.

I hunted a farm near Long Neck fri am and in the evening...didnt see any.
Sat. my son and i hunted Nanticoke in the am till 11 and he saw two does but no shot.
We went back to nanticoke at 1230pm and set up in a different area. At 430 I hear a shot, then he comes on the two way radio &quot; I just shot a deer&quot;. Boy was he excited. I asked him if it was a buck or doe, he says A BUCK a BIG BUCK. I get over to it and its a BIG Doe :) . His excitement took over :). It dressed out at 107Lb.
AWESOME!!!!!I am very proud of him, sticking it out in the rain and other elements mother nature threw at us.
See, him and i just started hunting last year. Neither one of us has killed a deer. I used to hunt when I was a kid, but stopped after a friend of mine passed away in 95. I never really hunted deer till last year. My birthday was friday.......what a present. :-))))

Good job goes out to Scott and Allen's son! Tough weekend to hunt!

I went to Maryland Friday am and saw only a small doe. Breezed through areas that held promise in the past and could find no good sign! Spent the afternoon in Delaware totin' my bow (Kinda felt like a guy with a knife at a gun fight!!). Didn't see a deer. Stayed in DE for the morning soaker Sat. and saw a small buck at sunrise. Tried a differnt spot in the afternoon and saw 7. Two bucks, the rest does and fawns. One buck WAS a real shooter...I stress WAS as he had broken off his main beam just past the brow tine! He snuck out of the pines, smelled some hunters on the neighbors ground and melted back in the clearcut. Hoping he'll make it through 'til next year!

Weather looks good for Monday. Good luck to everyone who gets out!
