disapointing day in western MA
well to start off this is my first year hunting a neighbor of mine i met a little over a year ago has taken me under his wing and is teaching me the ins and outs off whitetail deer hunting. i started off hunting in CT because they start amonth ahead of MA and i spent many days in my stand but didnt see anything well i went out the first day in mass didnt see anything in the mourning but jumped 3 deer in the afternnon heading to my buddies old proven night time spot that was the extent of that day. went out tuesday didnt see anything in the mourning and again back to the night time spot after lunch and 30 minutes before last light i had a 4 pointer come to me 45 yards away (1st deer i have ever seen in my tree stand) then left after that i had 2 does come in 2 minutes later at 30-35 yards i got a shot at a small one and i MISSED i was shaking so bad it wasnt even funny now i can shoot 40+ yards very well into a target but a target doesnt get that blood and adrenalin pumpin.
well thought i would share my experiance. |
RE: disapointing day in western MA
Stay with it! I hunted a while before seeing deer out of my stand, and when I did, it was like I was dreaming and not reality. Needless to say, I've blown my chances for adrenaline, etc. but have gotten better at stand placement and seeing deer as I learn more about the areas I hunt, etc.
Hang in there. Your success will increase as you tweak the places you hunt to match deer sightings, or lack of sightings. |
RE: disapointing day in western MA
Don't give up. I tell you I started hunting when I was 12 years old I never saw the first deer from my stand till I was 21 I didn't take my first one till I was 30 now that was 22 years ago and I have got at least 100 since then. It seems like after your first one they just keep comming. Its just that first one is a tough nut to crack. Keep your chin up and keep after it. If you get one before your 30 your doing better then me. just goes to show you persaverance. Now I got to go look for a deer I hit last night wish me luck. Mike

RE: disapointing day in western MA
You are seeing game including a buck, and had a shot opportunity. Not all that dissapointing if you ask me. I have gone many days in a row seeing nothing!!
As the others said, stick with it. I took a buck in MA last year after allot of hard work. It was my first MA deer in an emabarrisinly long time, and even longer since my last MA buck. |
RE: disapointing day in western MA
keep your head up, hunting in MA isnt like you see on TV. I have gone many a days without seeing a deer, and then its the best when you do see them. I still have yet to take one with the bow. Had one I could recover, and my only other deer I took with a Shotgun. Good luck and keep us posted.

RE: disapointing day in western MA
well i went out again today had to move stand position because a friend let me use his spot when i saw those and of course he now wanted to hunt it because i was seeing deer so i moved like 200-250 yards away and set up another portable in the last minute justto get out in the woods for a few hours today(had to help a buddy buther a small button buck he got on opening day) well it was like 20 minutes before dark and i was set up on a nice run 15 yards off and surprise surprise here comes a real nice doe and 2 skippers with her and of course they werent on the run i thought they should have come in on well i had a 25 yard down hill shot with her quartering away almost textbook so i took it and i hit her, but now my bad luck strikes again, i swear i hit her really good in the vitals so i saw her run 40 yards and stop and i stayed in my stand till like 30 minutes after dark and then climbed down to go look for my arrow and i could not find it. so i go look where i saw her standing till i lost sight of her due to the dark and there was a massive pool of bright red blood, well everything sounds good so far right? well i trailed her for over a mile and came to a road and i lost the trail must not have been as good as i thought it was, i dont really know now. well i am going to go back in the mourning and see if i cant find her.
but hey i just want to say thanks for the support it really does help the younger inexperianced guys who are making mistakes feel better to know others have been there done that :) and also mike I wish the best of luck on your tracking Billy Blanchet |
RE: disapointing day in western MA
Good Luck. The pool of bright red blood sounds promising, but over a mile???? you should have marked that pool of blood maybe and pulled out for the night.
Keep me posted on this mornings tracking. Jim |
RE: disapointing day in western MA
well went back today and i couldnt find anything else after the pool of blood went across the road and could only go 25 yards untill it got way to thick to even get through and no blood over there either so maybe she bedded in there somewhere and died i dont know but at any rate I cant find her and my bad luck strikes again but i will keep with it i am still seeing deer and and the more i see them the less shaky i am getting i just hope i missed her vitals and possibly hit her shoulder and hit an artery there and then rikocheted off and she is still alive. I just hope I didnt kill her for no reason now.
BTW how did your tracking go Mike? |
