DE Archery Season - September

Finally got out yesterday afternoon. Was set up early, 2:45pm hoping the deer would move early after the rain. Hunted the Public Ground. I had the woods to myself. I guess everyone else was smarter than I, because I saw nothing until walking out.

Unless its cool enough to let a deer lay out overnight, I quit at sunset. Well walking back to the truck I bumped right into a buck. Had 2 does behind him. It was legal shooting time still but even if I did see him before I rounded the bend, 1) He wasnt a quality buck 2) he was on the Refuge side of the path. He was only 15yds from me when I saw him. They all bounded into the bean field on the Refuge side of the property. The second day of the season and they are already smart. ;)

Going to the private field tomorrow in the AM. Should be nice weather!

Come on DE guys, post them hunts up here!

Was set up this morning 530am. At 540am I heard a deer enter the cornfield to right but did not see it. Five mins later a deer walked broadside in front of me not 5 yds from the stand, then it went into the cornfield. That was it. My dad saw nothing. We hunted until 845am.

Taking Friday off if the weather is nice. Deer hunt the morning then pack for a trip to the Jersey Shore the next week. I will come back one day though during the week for a deer hunt! It aint vacation with out hunting! :D

Went out yesterday, fox barked at a small group of does before I got on stand and they blew, heard them run onto the other property, never saw anything rest of the morning, went back out by 430pm only thing I saw was a racoon at my feeder. Had a lot of fresh tracks but no deer. Gonna rain today and tomorrow, hopefully friday night I will be able to make it back out. Not a very good opener[:o]

All was quiet atthe lease. I was in the stand 40 mins before shooting time. Saw and heard nothing. Sat until 8:45am. Its frustrating because there are spots that look like highways in and out of the woods and there are tons of tracks everywhere.[:@] Might be time to shift to the evening when I get back fromvacation.[/align]

Got out for the first time last Saturday for a morning hunt down at Blackbird SF. Took a buddy who is new to hunting, set him in a spot and put myself about 100yds away. Figures, I didn't see anything and he had three does pass by just out of bow range.

Am burning a vacation day this Friday to go to my secret spot in NCC. I'll let you know how I made out next Monday.

Went out saturday morning and evening, only thing I had was a deer come behind me in the bottom, its still very thick in there but I could here it walking through the water and got a very small look at its back, I tried the bleat can but got nothin! Still getting fresh tracks around my stand and feeder. Hopefully with this cold front, and the storm moving in tonight I can get out to the woods, might be just what they need to get movin! Hey DE.Hunter, what blackbird track were you at? I passed a couple guys saturday morning in townsend

Yes,Paul in Delaware you can bait on private land, but not on public land.

Slayer45, the BlackBird tracksare allabout the same but I prefer the thoes without the state stands. I like to walk in, do some scouting and pick my own spot. The place is littered with illegal screw stands and home made ladder stands but I guess there from the locals?

RE: DE Archery Season - September

Well I know there are not to many that bowhunt Blackbird tracts, now once the gun season's open up, look out, cause there are some....lets just say......."gifted" hunters that come out. They dont care what they do and where they go! I dont hunt state land simply because I have a family farm I hunt on, but I do know of a couple good spots around the area if I had too! You ever try Ceder Swamp, some really nice deer out there if you can stand the bugs this time of year!

RE: DE Archery Season - September

Went out Wed the 13th. Saw nothing in the AM. Bumped one walking back to the truck. It just ran deeper into the corn. Next hunt will be the 19th. I'd kill for a West wind. It was some version of east EVERY day last week. Certainly F'd up the fishing at the shore, not to mention limiting my deer hunting AM options.

RE: DE Archery Season - September

Well the rain messed up my plans for last Friday so I looked ahead on the Weather chanel and chose to wait for this Friday. Sunny and a cool 71 as the high beats wet and humid. Hopefully I have some good news to share after this Friday!

RE: DE Archery Season - September

Im heading out tomorrow (19th) in the AM before the rain hits. I've always wanted to try an ambush spot on the public property I hunt. The problem is its on the main path into the woods for other stands. I also need a wind anything but a form of east. Im going to gamble that the wind blows south like they are predicting and no one else will be out on a Tuesday this time a year esp when its not going to be all that cool (low to mid 60s). If the wind doesnt pan out, i have a workable spot deep in the woods, but I didnt see much sign there early in the season. I'll let you know how it works out.

RE: DE Archery Season - September

I didnt go today. Stayed up too late watching the football game. I also wasnt thrilled with gambling the spot I wanted to hunt on this wind. Yeah it was light, but it was swinging SSE and anything east would have killed my chances. I'll wait for a west wind. Other spots I could have gone just havent been producing ANY deer sightings in the morning. Next hunt will be Saturday afternoon somewhere.

I went out last wed. as well, had a doe and a just out of spots fawn come in, doe never gave me a shot, stayed in the woods and I lost her but the fawn came right in, could have stuck him 4-5 times but I didnt have the heart, just to small, figure I'll give him a while to grow up! Gonna go out tonight to a new spot I have just outside the town limits where I live. I set my climber up tuesday night and dropped some corn, hoping the rain would cover my scent but I guess that didnt happen! Hopefully with this cool air they will move tonight, gonna go friday night as well! Has anyone noticed that the deer are not moving during the daylight ours for the last few weeks, seems like I was seeing a lot more and now, unless a storm is coming I dont really see them. See alot of deer signs but no deer!

Went out tonight for the first time this year w/ a freind who has permisson to hunt a small farm in Pike Creek area. As soon as we walked in we spoted a small buck. I stalked him, and got w/in 40yrds before he spooked, not to spooked though, this was around 5. Got into our standat about 5:45 we saw two bucks (one I think was the one I stalked ealier) come out about 80 yrds away. They were just grazing, and eating berries off the trees, when all of a sudden the got spooked by something, and walked away (wasn't me, they were looking the other way at something I could not see). With about 5m of shooting time left I spotted a nice sized buck about 100 yrds away. My buddy was walking around trying to see if he could sneak up on some other deer, and he spoked acouple other deer and they ran over w/ the Buck and that was the end of that. Nice to see deer again from a deer stand. May be going out Saturday morning, I'll post if I do.

See alot of deer signs but no deer!
This has been the status quo at our lease for years during the month of Sept. As long as the crop is up in the fields, we see very little mornings and evenings. As soon as the corn is cut in Oct or early Nov, things change drasticly. Its frustrating hunting this time of year knowing there are deer in the area, nice deer at that, and they are hiding out all day in standing crop.

That being said, itsstill nice getting out and in the stand. I hopethe weather this weekend pans out. I prefer hunting evenings. As fall aproaches, this will be alot more fun. If Ididnt have to work tomorrow, what a nice morning it would be! Mid 40s in Sept. Cant beat it with a stick. :D I hope some get to enjoy it.

Heading out in a hour or so. Gonna try ground spot that hasnt been hunted since open day and never in the evening. There were some early rubs in the area the last time I was poking around in there. Gonna be a warm sit. Wishing for that 50 degree weather we had a few days ago.

Had a little excitement today. Had 2 yearlings come in at 615pm. Had multiple broadside opportunities within 10 yds but let them go. I was ground hunting so it was pretty cool being that close. They might have weighed 45lbs though. I know nice tender meat, but just not something I could take to the butcher. Ask me how I feel in January if the freezer is still empty ;)

Anyone else venture out today? It was warm and muggy. Plenty of Skeeters. Cant wait for the cooler weather to return.

I went out the friday before last and it looked like it was gonna rain. I could even hear thunder. I got out later than I wanted. I was settled in a 5:00. At 5:45 I got a text message about a party down the road that night and when I was returning the call I saw a deer coming. It was a nice doe and she was alone. She walked out at 20yds and I sent my arrow right through her shoulder. I heard her crash not 50yds from me. I climbed down from my climber and went in after her right away since it started to rain. I then took her to the local butcher shop. I had her gutted, skinned and hangin in the walk in by 7:00. I was home before it got dark and dinner wasnt even done yet.

I was out Saturday morning, we were being lazy and only got there about 1/2hr before legal. Should have been there 1hr as when we were going in, we kicked out 5. Never saw another deer. One thing that might of messed us up, which we didn't realize until after we were done, was the property owner had a big bond fire last night, and it was still smoldering when we left. It was blowing in direction of our stands, anyone think this would keep deer away? Going Wen. Afternnoon next.

Went out sat. morning with nothing, on my way out I checked another stand that I was planning on hunting sat. evening with my daughter and jumped a big doe off the feeder, was about 8:00am, went to that stand in the evening, got hotter than you know what and never saw anything. I did hear a fawn yelling down on the next property over when we left, sounded like he got left or lost, kinda weird. Not sure if I will be able to go much this week, might try and go sat. evening looks like a storm is gonna come in sunday, might work out. Good luck

Well fellas I went out tonight to cape henlopen state park west. "DOD FARM" I was setled in by 4:00 and the wind seemed to be east/ north east. At 6:10 I heard somthing coming through the oak woods. I told myself to stand up but didnt. Then there they were right on top of me. A big doe and 2 youngins. I was literally looking through the bottom of my climber. I had to wait a good 5 minutes to get stood up and by then I had no shot. They fed away on acorns and finally at 50yds I had a shooting hole. I shot right over her. Figures since I then ranged them for 42yds. I stayed standing as the deer trotted away and then began eating again. It wasnt 5 minutes and here came 7 more. All does. I waited to see if the bucks were there and they werent. I passed on a chip shot at 15yds on what looked to be last years youngin, looking for a shot on one of the big girls. After eating acorns they fed through the holly in front of me and never gave me a good shot. All of the deer were under 30yds now. It was then when I looked for that smaller doe. And there she was at 25yds quartering away with her left leg out eating acorns. I figured 1 in the hand is worth 2 in the bush right. WHACK and she ran off. I could see the exit wound perfect in her off shoulder. When I got down I was admiring the red arrow stuck in the ground and I looked in the direction she ran and wow. There she was not 40yds. It was a perfect afternoon. I told my self to go in to that white oak hole I have hunted since before the state purchased it. The accorns are dropping heavy and it looks like hoggs have been in there. I will be returning there this week. But I will be waiting on the bucks. They have scrapes and rubs every where in there. I never even gutted the deer until I got home. Not wanting to contaminate the area any worse than I had already. What a great day. OH and the doe I shot ended up being 125lbs dressed, and it was the little one. The other girls must have been around 150. They made her look little.

Hey - Congrats on the deer.
My son rode thru the park last week and called me to say there was Albino in the field across from nature center.Wonder how long that deer will last.

Alot of deer in that park for the pickins.BD ratio is way outa whack. All I've ever seen down there is scrub bucks. Not enough habitat to support all the deer.

Congrats to those who have scored on deer in Sept! Looks like i'll get one more hunt in on the 30th if the wind cooperates. I was going to hunt in the evening, but then an event came up and I'm switching to the morning. Suppose to be in the 40s which will be nice, but the people to the east of the leased place blast away, dare I say poach, wood ducks during the early teal season in the AM. At least they have the last 2 years. Never seen a teal in the place but they shoot away. Cant be good for the deer hunting which is why I prefer evenings but what can you do? I'll be out Monday evening as well. That will be the first post to the 'October' thread. ;)

Good Luck to all!
