Funnels work great anytime of the season, as long as the pressure isn't there so much that deer become aware of it. They'll use it during normal day-to-day movements, and also during hunting season when attempting to escape from other hunters.

As long as the deerdon't pick up on the fact that someone is about to sling an arrow or send a bullet their way in that area....it's a great place to start.

yes they work . During gun season we put on some drives the deer run through the funnels and if we put the spotters at the right spot some deer don't make it to the other side of the funnel

This might sound alittle strange, but i have always had success hunting escape routes on heavy hunted public land. I've found the best way to locate escape routes, is to put on drives during the off-season and use standers to locate the routes the deer are taking when pushed. Most of these deer are using the same bedding areas year around, so when the season rolls around- we don't scout for gun season, we go set up on the same routes every year and it always leads to a bunch of dead deer when other hunters start pushing them.

Be careful what you say there....I believe it's against the ace venturis laws to pursue or chase wildlife out of season...;)

I'll just call it scouting in the middle of bedding areas.

I'll have to think about that. What should I be looking for as escape funnels or routes within the woods?

Sport,

During the offseason, drive the areas that you know deer like to bed in. Take a couple buddies and post them all around these areas- 9 times out of 10, the deer will exit the bedding areas the exact same way when pushed- these are escape routes. Find these places and set up on them during the actual season.
