Sunset in NY law
 

How many of you New Yorkers out their really quit hunting at the law required time of sunset.Their is at least 35-45 more minutes of good shooting light left.This is supposed to be the "primetime" and we are supposed to be unloaded and walking out by sunset.Is everybodys state like this? What do you folks out their do?I know its for safety but i personally have never heard of any accidents in the evening.Seems all in the morning.

You've peaked my interest SS. For some reason I was under the impression that legal shooting time was like 1/2 hour after sunset. I'll have to check into that farther. If you're right, I've been in violation A LOT.

Its sunrise to sunset in NY. We lose alot of hunting time in both the morning and at night.

Here in Pa we have a Pa meridian map that we go by.It is in the book you get with your license.As an example in my area from Jan.6-12 you begin at 6:53 and end at 4:54 but I would according to the map add 20 min. to each time or 7:12 or 5:14. I have had game wardens stop me at my car at quitting time and left with a call of someone shooting after hours so their is no guessing in Pa.
I still think especally in the extended ML and Archery season that prime time for deer to come out is lost but you have to set some kind of standard or some guys would shoot till they couldn't see.

In Vermont, it's 30 minutes before sunrise and 30 minutes after sunset. In Maine, I believe it's 15 minutes before sunrise and 15 minutes after sunset.

Usually it's waterfowl hunting that those times apply to. Don't know about NY.

On opening day of S zone last year I counted 22 shots fired before sunrise - the earliest was about 45 min. before legal hunting began. I often hear shots 15-30 min after sunset as well. There are obviously quite a few hunters out there that don't follow the rules.

Pa is a half hour before sunrise till sunset. This is moronic! If you can safely shoot a half hour before the sun comnes up I can't see why we cant get the same time on the other end of the day! Ifeel for you NY guys. You've got it even worse!

on opening day of shotgun every year i pass the time away sitting there waiting for deer and legal shooting time,listening and counting how many shots are fired before legal time.most years i will go by this sunrise and sunset limit.but i always am in the stand before daylight and usauly stay past dark.the reason for this law is 15 min after sunset or 10 or 15 min before dark you still can see right infront or under you,the problem is you can't see beyond that.there maybe someone walking out of the woods 100 yards out and could get cought in a cross fire.now to answer the question,would i shoot before or after legal time.yes, but only from a tree stand and straight under me.i would not concider doing it from a ground stand,to risky can't see beyond the target.but straight down or out to a 30 degree angle from a tree stand you can see beyond your target,nothing but ground.it is a violation but i think most hunters will do it if the situation is just right.
