Squrrels and skining them

Does anybody have a good way to skin these critters. I have dozens in my woods and have enjoyed taking the grand kids out to shoot them, but damn what a pain in the ass to skin, especialy the bigger older ones.

Here's a method an old timer I met showed me once. He showed me with a rabbit but I have done it on squirles and other small game too.

Cut a slit in the skin across the middle of the back, do not cut into the meat though just the skin. make sure the cut goes the entire width of the back or it doesn't work as good.

next, pull the skin away from the meat with your fingers around where you made the cut. Get your four fingers in under the hide with yout thumbs on the outside of the skin - Your hands should be like if you were to make a fist with both hands and put them together in front of you with the knuckles together and top of hands pointed upward. then just act as if you were trying to turn the skin inside out. Once it is pretty much inside out cut off the four feet, tail, and head.

Doing it this way you will have no hair on the meat and it gan be done in under 5 minutes -

Remove inards after the animal is skinned.

jhoffman explains it the onlt way I have ever known to do it. Here's a link that offers pretty much the same explination along with pics. Although there are two people doing it if you just grab both pieces at once and pull it works just as good.

The only other advice I can offer is do it immediately upon shooting the squirrel when it's the easiest...it gets tougher when they cool....

yepper, the way I was taught; I do however cut the tail and head off first so I can pull the skin up over the neck and rear end. Then to the feet and cut them off, then gut em! Doesn't take me more then a few minutes for each squirrel!

Jim,
No offense but the day I need somebody to hold a squirrel for me to skin it is the day I should prolly quit hunting.......lol

Heres what I do, cut a slit between the back legs(underbelly) pull the back legs through that slit. Pull the hide up over the body to the neck. Cut off the head. Cut off all four feet at the knees. Then a slit up the belly to gut. Quarter and put in salty water. Takes about 2 mins per squirrel.

I don't skin them at all. Just throw then right onto the frying pan and drop a slab of butter on them.

lol j/k

JLmoore1956 does it the exact way I do it. Quick, easy and keeps the hair off the meat.

Yepper, it is like Major Payne says, "Quick, fast, and in a hurry."[8D]
