In PA. we grow everything big, I guess.
We have record size black bears....routinely.
Our deer have 3 fawn litters....routinely
We have coyotes the size of wolves.
And now..bobcats on steroids.
I like where I live.

THESE ARE BOBCAT PHOTOS....^^^^^^^^
There are 5 main differences between bobcat and cougar(mt.loin ect. ect.)
1) SIZE-
Acougarreaches lengths of 6-9 feet. Males average 130 pounds but can be as heavy as 150 pounds++ females averaging 90 pounds
A bobcat weighs typically between 15-30 pounds.
2) Color-
A cougar has typically 1 color - a tawny gold or a twany grey
A bobcat is spotted or striped.
Cougar cubs are spotted at birth for camoflauge purposes.
3) Tail-
A cougars tail usually is atleast as long as half of their body.
A bobcat is named for their short, stublike tail.
4) Ears-
A cougar has rounded, wideset ears
A bobcat has very distinct (tufts) of hair on top of their ears (that make their ears pointed)
5) Fur-
A cougar has short hair all over
A bobcat has rough / semi long hair...with the longest hair on the sides of their face.
There are also many differences in the way the animals are put together anatomically. The way their hips are set, The cougar's jawline is also diffrent to accomidate different types of food they eat.
For example: a cougar's mandibular condyle protrudes farther upwards behind the zygomatic process than the bobcat's does.
Also notice in livbuck's photo that no spotted or strip pattern is present on that cat. Notice that the hair is short, smooth and 1 basic solid color.
Also notice, that even at a distance, a bobcat's long distinctive hair next to its face (cheeks) is very prevalent in all the bobcat photos but not in livbuck's photo.
Which leads me to assume, that if that photo wasn't tampered with, the cat in livbuck's pic was indeed a cougar.
The real question here isn't whether its a bobcat or cougar, but were the photo was taken.
An ecologist could probally identify the species of plants in the photo and be able to determine, if that variety of plant is present in penn.
I only study biology, and zoology for my major right now, but ecology will be next on my list for a minor.

Those a real prety Bobcats. None of them look like eastern ones though. Where were these taken? Did you go look at cougardeville's link to the bobcat picture? There are more on another thread. The spots are not so noticable in the east, also the original picture on here Has a small tuft in the throat area. That picture was taken in August. Summer coat!

another thing, look at cougar's photo of the bobcat, I can see stripes on the side of his belly.....I said that bobcats either have spots OR stripes. regardless of a summercoat or not, the bobcat and cougar still have many differences. They can shed away hair, but they wont shed away underlying color, spots, stripes ect...ect..ect...
Oh by the way, I really don't know anything about the anatomy of animals or such

.....I just like to say big words. Dont take anything that I say serious in the fact that its all just scientifically proven.

this is a new york bobcat

this is a bobcat from maine

a bobcat from virginia with its summer coat

can you tell the difference between these pictures and these ones?

I cant tell the difference between the two

Even if an eastern bobcat has less spots or stripes than the western bobcat, you should still be able to tell the difference between a bobcat and a cougar......
