non-hunter needing advice!! :)
Hello!
I have no life, so I spend all my free time walking around in the woods near my house :) I live in Vermont. I have some questions. I'm a sixteen year old girl who is just barely five feet tall, and am therefore a very good target for someone looking to rape, murder, etc. My question is this: would you say that it's dangerous to be in the woods, alone, during hunting season? And what precautions do you think I should take besides wearing neon orange clothing? Is there a big chance that someone hunting could hear me walking through tall grass or bushes, and would just shoot without checking to make sure of what it is making the noise? And is it less dangerous to walk on land with "no hunting" signs posted, or do people generally disregard those? Thanks for your advice!! :D Robin |

First of all you should never walk alone in the woods. Also make sure you tell someone where you will be.Definitely wear your orange.Hunting is very safe but you always have those isolated accidents. If you know of an area that guys are hunting try to avoid that area until they are gone.Keep safe.

Be careful, wear orange.
Some things are true whether you believe them or not. |

man if this post doesnt smell of rank PETA .

RE: non-hunter needing advice!! :)
Vermont is VT, not VA. If your from Virgina, don't wear orange while pumping gas.

Heck,
No need to fear. You are safer in the woods during hunting season than walking the streets of most cities, riding an ATV, or hundreds of other things we all do everyday. Like looking both ways before crossing the street though, or only swimming with a buddy, there are some things you should do to be more safe. Wear Blaze orange, especially a hat, don't crawl through the brush or other activities that would make a hunter think it was an animal and not a person, if you see a hunter, make sure he sees you, just like you would the driver of a car, make eye contact, waving at him with that blaze orange hat will usually get a friendly wave in return, be courteous, if you see a hunter, he probably wants to be left alone more than you do, so walking up to him is not considered real friendly (if he's right beside a trail, it's his own fault), always let someone know where you are weather in the woods or out on the town, carry a whistle in case you get lost or sprain an ankle. Probably a lot more sage advice around here, but what do you mean you have no life? Walking in the woods is great fun. Find somebody to take you hunting and you'll see that walking in the woods is a huge part of the enjoyment we all get out of it. |

Jersey Joe has a point: hunting is much safer than pumping gas. I think you should spend as much time in the woods as possible, you are safest there. You will probably meet some of the best people in the country, good family oriented hunters just out to enjoy the great outdoors. Whatever you do, be careful of those animal rights conventions, they usually take place in dangerous cities. And besides, everyone knows many of them are on the FBI's list of Domestic Terrorists groups, and the ones that aren't, are being investigated for providing funding for terrorism. Man, that would be horrible to be suckered into joining PETA only to find out that your contributations were going to terrorism. Especially if your child ends up with some sort of cancer, a cancer that was nearly cured at a research lab, until one of those terrorists groups blew it up with money from your contribution. Yeah, that would be bad.
Get out in the woods and enjoy life before some animal rights person who has lost the capacity for reason and rational thought blows up some fur store or lab and gets you in the blast. Sounds like the safest place you can be is in the woods with hunters to protect you. Good luck. |

As has been said, wear blaze orange, especially a hat. Try to have a companion at all times, try to stay to the well marked trails as much as possible and if you see a hunter make sure he knows your there. I don't mean yell hello, just wave and get his attention. You'll find that the majority of hunters are the most ethical people around and will go out of their way to help you. Most important, always let someone know where you'll be and what time to expect you. The woods can be dangerous, the four legged wild life is every bit as dangerous as the two legged kind. Carry a celphone if available.

If you have no life and spend all your time walking in the woods and you know you are a target for rape, murder etc, then why walk by yourself in the woods....Dale...I'm with you on this one...something just ain't right!

A real hunter dont shoot without looking and have no interest in molesting you. You have a better chance getting molested or shot or stabbed in your city or town. Just wear orange and defend yourself from the non-hunting weirdos in the city

Marquez fan: Since you are already familiar with the outdoors and seem to like it out there...why not consider becoming a hunter yourself? Wait! keep an open mind and read this;
1: Hunters provide the money that is used to protect and preserve much of the natural lands we have left in the USA every time we buy or renew our license or buy hunting related equipment. 2: If you eat meats from a supermarket or a fast food store: remember that most of it is made from "jailed" animals being fed un-natural foods and chemicals. We hunters get some of our meat from animals that live FREE and eat right. Wild animals enjoy this good life right up until we turn them into food and we only take the amount of animals that the goverment wildlife experts recommend. This helps keep the rest quite healthy. 3: Even if you choose not to shoot anything, you will be able to take those walks in the woods with the comfort of being permitted to carry a shotgun and having the knowledge of an outdoorswoman. You will gain this knowledge from studying for your license and testing it in the woods. Talk to your parent or legal guardian. reach out to the local hunting clubs. See for yourself what this is all about and don't let a TV show or movie tell you what to think about this. Danger can be found anywhere, but, I feel safer in the hunting lands than I do in my own neighborhood. -BB- P.S. I'm still a new hunter myself, Any of you more experienced people reading this are more than welcome to step in and correct anything I put here or add to it etc. Obviously I've decided to proceed on the assumption that her post is on the up-and-up... |
RE: non-hunter needing advice!! :)
I'll assume the post is on the up-and-up -
I wouldn't worry about going into the woods during hunting season - maybe you like the woods and enjoy nature - I certaintly do - I just happen to enjoy hunting as much. Still you should take precautions and make sure you are seen. Also, as hunters, we must have permission to be on the lands we hunt, so should you. If you are walking on state land, or other public land, enjoy your walks, but be safe and be seen. Be aware that hunting involves alot of preparation, and a hiker could inadvertently screw up, ones hunt. If you are on public land, you have just as much right to be there - and most hunters understand this - if you are on private land - do not assume that "no hunting" signs, mean there is no hunting taking place. In MOST cases, other hunters post the property to keep additional hunters and others out, not to make the property a "no hunting" area - especially in rural areas like most of Vermont. Thanks for posting - ![]() |
