RE: 1200 lb bear shot in Pa.
not trying to start too much trouble, but highly unlikely. the last time i read about huge bears coming from PA, i talked with some guides in new brunswick, and in maine. i told them the weights that PA hunters are claiming, and they laughed. according to them, it ain't possible. the problem is that judging bear on the hoof is very difficult. and while you do grow them large, not weighing them in makes it that much more difficult to judge, unless you have some experience. got a good example: a buddy just moved to PA this summer from here in vermont. he had a bear kicking around the neighborhood that many people saw.. his neighbor claimed it had to weigh 1000, but my friend knew that live weight, it may have pushed 500. now, from what i have read and have been told, a bear when gutted will lose between 25-30%. that 1200lb bear just dropped to 900lbs, which is how most of us relate weights, dressed weight. still pretty unlikely. also, if in fact they did weigh that much, wouldn't you think that PA would be shattering the B&C, or P&Y records, because something that fat has just got to have a huge skull on it, which is how bears are scored? jmho, Pat

Its common knowledge that the biggest bears come from areas where the winters are less severe. Its simple...longer feeding season, better feed means larger size. Some areas of northern Quebec black bears are only out 4 months! Some huge bears have been reported on NJ, as well as the Carolinas. (Alaska and parts of western Canada are exceptions, as Bergmans Rule applies, larger size to survive further north... as well as protien rich food...fish.)

Its true,1200# and has a 30" skull but the hunter (Mitch Rompola) is not interested in the hype and headaches associated with killing a world record so he will not allow it to be photographed or a tape measure put to it...
