"Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
First off, what a great opening day:)Seen a lot of deer. I passed on two spikes and 6 doe. Alarger spike(3rd of the day)I couldn't pass. I bagged him at 2:10. Field dressed the buck, put him on the quad and went straight to the barn. This is when the fun ends. The barn is close to the road. A DEC official was driving by and seen us:eek:My deer was still on the quad, he noticed there was no tag on it and wrote me up[:@]The law is you must fill out the tagimmediately, and tag it as soon as you drag it to camp or get to transportation(technically guilty as charged). I misinterpreted the law. I never considered my quad as transportation,I just thought they meant tag it before you put it in a truck or car. Every deer we ever harvested was tagged in our barn, on our property, never crossing a road or property line. So now I am at the mercy of the local court to pay a fine between $50 - $200 [:-]Believe me the next deer WILL be tagged ASAP rain, sleet or snow[:'(]
Question, when do you guys fill out your tags? Thanks for letting me vent |
RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
As soon as the guts are gone the tag is on. :D

RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
Here in MD the deer must be tagged before you move it. I am notorious for being excited about the kill and forgeting to put the tag on until I'm at the truck or halfway back. One of these days I'm going to find myself in the same senario your in. I need to remember to put that tag on before I do anything else.

RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
with my most recent deer, i cut the date out of the tag before moving him, then after we dragged him to the truck i filled out the tag at the truck. Earlier in the season i was hunting behind my house and dragged him all the way home and then fille dout the tag, but i would definitly tag one before putting it in a truck or on a wheeler.

RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
I fill out my tag as soon as I am sure the deer is dead. In MA you can't move that deer at all (drag included)until its tagged.
|
RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
I forgot a pen a few years ago and just cut the day and month out, when I got to the truck there wasa DEC guy waiting. He saw that I had cut the tag and didn't give me a problem.
I fill it out before I gut it. |
RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
We can't move em unless tagged. I usually fill out the tag before gutting to let myself calm down a bit, rather have shakey hands with a pen than a knife.
|
RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
I think in most states the law says tag it first. It also makes sense in terms of not getting the license or tag all messed up by bloody hands.
Pa law says immediately. Had a problem years back with a local cop when Pa law said "tag immediately after removing entrails but before moving the animal" The local Barney Fife gave mea hard time for gutting (but not moving it) first. Now I always tag it before I do anything else. |
RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
I tag before I move it.

RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!

RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
Tag it. then gut it. thats what i always do. it will save on headaches later.
|
RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
I cut the dates and fill out the tag entirely as soon as I'm standing over the deer. I put the tag on when its in the truck.

RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
I tag mine before I gut it out.
|
RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
Tagging it is the 1st thing I do as per law.
|
RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
I've always done it same as you - I hunt on our own property - I usually don't tag it till back at camp.
|
RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
Tag um at the truck....
|
RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
We tag our deer when we get back to (private land) camp.
|
RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
ORIGINAL: lost horn As soon as the guts are gone the tag is on. :D |
RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
Excuse me for being an ignoramous, but what does it mean when you "cut the dates" on a tag?
|
RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
No worries. Its a NY thing. We have to cut the month and day off the sides of the tag - a little triangle on one side with the month and another with the day of the month on the other.
Its NY's little way of making sure you don't change the date, I suppose. Anyway, in NY, you are required to cut the month and day and fill out and sign the tag entirely before transporting the deer. The tag actually is not required to be attched to the deer until you have completed the transportation. |
RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
personally, I thing the filling out the tag in the woods is ridiculous. I never have and won't. It is is filled out immediately when the deer is at camp (so what is the difference?). why worry about carrying a pen around n the woods and losing it or having it break in my pack or....or.... (I aready have too much in there to keep track of). Maybe it's just me??
on a similar note - we had 2 guys get ticketed for improper tagging at our Adirondack camp. We are 8 miles from the nearest paved road and 6 miles from the nearesttruck accessable road and they still found us! The DEC guy was good about it, but still ticketed them. Really just an honest mistake, but all those situations aren't (unfortunately). |
RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
Gut, Tag and then move!
|
RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
I tag it first before my hands get bloody. Easier to write on the tag minus the blood.

RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
A very interesting topic. My state's law states to punch the tag immediately after reaching the downed animal. The tag does not have to be attached to the animal until it reaches a mode of transportation or camp, whichever comes first. This year, I shot my elk, my dad went back a couple hundred yards to get the gear, I punched the tag, put it in my pocket, we took some pics, and then I got to work while my dad got the truck about a mile away. When we got her in the truck, I wrote the unit of the kill on the tag, and attached it to her leg. Pretty simple. I like the fact that it doesn't have to be attached immediately. This helps in keeping it from getting lost somewhere. Good luck.
BTW - the only thing we have to fill out with ink is the unit of kill. This doesn't have to be done immediately, but as soon as you can. The month, date, sex, and antler points have to be punched out with a knife inmmediately upon reaching the animal. All of the months are pre-printed on the tag, as well as the dates, and antler points per side up to 5, and then male and female. |
RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
i tag my deer after i gut em, and drag em. when i get to my truck i fill it out with the heater on! that way i can wash up and grab a warm pen thats not frozen.
iv dont this for years. if i get cought. il pay the fine. |
RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
Iwould say its upto the DEC Officers interpretation of the situation, I believe NYS law says that when the game is reduced to ones possession it needs to be tagged.
|
RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
you know, I really dont even know what the law is on this matter where I hunt. We have a liscense we have to fill out and we usually do that at the house before taking it to the check in station. Maybe I should change the method! EJ

RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
Barnex, Here in New York State we have months and days on the edge of the tag, you are suppose to cut out the appropriate day and mo. as soon as you get your deer. then you can fill the tag out back at your vehicle, that way you can't use the excuse I forgot my pen. Everyone ussually carries a knife to gut there deer, right??
|
RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
thesource has it right when it comes to the tagging of NYS deer. For you hunters that have forgotten a pen you can use the exposed head of a lead tipped CFbulletto fill out your tag. Once you get back to your camp or transport then you can go over it with a pen. I have done it this way a couple of times. For you guys that don't have an exposed lead tipped bullet(ML, archers and shotgun)than you better carry a pen.

RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
rich - I beleive you are inccorect
the "law" is that the tag must be filled out imediately after deer is down - that means written out as well as date cut out. The tag, however, does not need to be on the deer until itgets toyour camp or goes into your truck. this is directly from the 2005 reg guide. |
RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
I'm off the road a piece, I usually tag em either when I gut em or when I drive em to the house
|
RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
I belive that you have to have the tag filled out when you relize the deer is dead in NY. You have to put the tag on the deer before you transpot it in or on any vehical.
|
RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
here in WV you are supposed to tag it before you move it .even before field dressing it
i have only ever tagged one deer before in my life and then i didnt do it until it was loaded up on the truck |
RE: "Un-tagged deer" DEC ticket NOT HAPPY!
Before we can move a downed deer in Maryland it must have a tag attached and we also must fill out a harvest card that came with our license.
