Nothing this weekend. Hunted yesterday afternoon after work until dark. Nothing but a wet butt! Was out this morning and was greeted with about an inch of wet snow when I left the housethat turnd back to rain. This has got to be the worst weather for hunting I can remenber in a long time. It has been a good test for waterproof clothing! Hopefully it will be all rained out by the first weekend in Nov. when I took a 4 day weekend from work. By then I hope the rut will be going strong!
GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!
MIKE

RE: Any lucky NYers?

I got real lucky last Thursday afternoon. I got out of work at 5pm and it finally stopped raining. I hadn't been out at all yet this seasonso I grabbed my stuff and jumped in a stand that was right around the corner. I usually see deer from it but have never taken one there yet. I wasn't in the stand 20 minutes and a buck walked into the field and started feeding 100 yards away. He was heading away from me though. I used a doe bleat can and he reallyresponded toit. Everytime I called he got closer until he was standing broadside at 20 yards. He was a young 7 pointer but he had a big body. I couldn't decide whether or not to shoot. I really was hoping to see a much bigger buck that I saw while driving to my stand earlier.Anyway I decided to shoot him at 20 yards and he acted like nothing happened. He walked into the woods and layed down and went to sleep 30 yards from me. After I gutted him and dragged him up to the laneway there were five does standing there. They ran off before I could pick up my bow.

Saturday morning I was sneaking up a trail and walked up to 5 does. The biggest one gave a perfect broadside shot at 30 yards. Just as I released the arrow she saw me and spun around right out of it's path. I wasn't in the woods five minutes and was within sight of my camper. I almost hadtwo deer down in 25 minutes of hunting! So far so good.........

Hunted all week with the muzzleleader near Indian Lake in Hamilton County.

Had a misfire on Saturday on a fat doe.

Missed a decent 4 pt on Sunday. He was about 90 yards and I hit a small sapling at about 60 yards that caused a deflection.

Didn't see a single deer on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. I did see a bunch of turkeys, a few coyotes, and watched a hawk swoop through the woods and grab a squirrel.

Thursday morning I shot a big doe at close range - maybe 10 yards. I didn't expect her to run at all, but she turned tail and ran off into a thicket.

Spend all day looking for her and never found her. Had the help of several friends too. Only found her the next day because of the crows. She had died on a steep sidehill in a thicket about 250 yards from where I shot her. She was wedged in between some bolders and didn't have any blood on her. I must have walked past that spot 10 times, but she was impossible to see unless you were right on top of her.

Didn't even see any blood in the area next to where she died.

The coyotes had eaten a good portion of her. I salvaged what I could. I quit after that - what a damn waste!

I was lucky enough to have off on Friday and the day was beautiful. Took a doe after letting 8 others pass. The rest of the weekend was a wash out. 2" of snow on the deck Sunday morning in Greene county.

saw lots of deer on opening day of rifle season. Saw at elast 10 does in the morning, i had one in my sights for a while, but she was too small to shoot first thing opening morning. In the afternoon I saw two does and 7 turkeys, then i saw this guy less than 30 yards out and i doubt he knew where i was even after i shot him twice. he made it maybe 50 or 60 yards.

RE: Any lucky NYers?

I've only managed to get out 5 times so far and have seen 7 deer from the stand, including 3 yearling bucks. Last Thurs. I passed up a 3-pt. at 15 yds. in the morning and then in the evening I had a buttonbuck eating acorns within 10 yds. of my stand for over an hour. Last night, I went out in the rain and ended up passing a 25 yd. shot on an awesome little yearling 9-pt. that I've been watching since summer. He's a mainframe 8-pt with kinda palmated beams and really long browtines. His coolest feature is a small palmated fork on his right G2. I watchedhim through binos for 15 minutes. He'sbig bodied for a yearling andhis neck is swelled up too. I sure hope he makes it through gun season...He'll be a monster in a couple of years. Hopefully, I'll get a crack at a buck thats at least 2.5 yrs. old or a big doe in the near future.. Good luck to everyone.
