first year hunting the adirondacks
This will be my first year hunting the Adirondacks (near Indian Lake) and I was hoping to get some tips. Ihaven'thunted big woods before (aside from a few days in the Alleghenies), mostly fragmented land with a mix of woods and farmland.
Also - anyone know of any good books that focus on hunting the Adirondacks? I'll be up there for muzzleloader season. A few questions: If I hike in several miles, am I likely to run into other hunters? Should I bother with the tree stand? Tips on scouting (taking my first scouting trip this weekend)? |

RE: first year hunting the adirondacks
Tom, I wouldnt bother with the treestand.Deercan be few and far between. What time of year is NY muzzleloader season? Used to be there rifle season came in around the 3rd week of october, if I was to hunt the "dacks" Id wait till the post rut and some snow and walk until I found a big fresh track and start following it. The bucks are trying to put on weight before the winter and you can catch up to them. As for books, that I cant help you with. A few other words of advice, dont expect to see many deer, if you hunt a week and see a deer a day your doing good.

RE: first year hunting the adirondacks
definitely don't bother with a tree stand. more than likely you won't see any/many hunters unless you are near a popular/easily accessable area. the early ML season can be quite green and leafy and greatly hinders sight. good luck
