that buck went about 175 yds. after the shot because I thought he was quartering away more then he was and i hit to far back....ended up hitting one lung, the liver, and the esophogas.

Again, congratulations on deer. Just out of curiosity, how did you hit the esophogas if you thought he was quartering away more than you thought he was? Doesn't that mean that you'd hit further back that you originally thought?

Jimbo--yes I did hit furthur back than I thought. What I believe to have happened was that I hit just infront of the diaphram. I never touched any of the guts in the back. When I opened up the chest cavity however, there was chunks of food in there. The only way I can think of as to how I got there is that I sliced through the esophogas (remember the stomach is behind the diaphram so the esophogas runs all the way from the mouth, through he thoracic (chest) cavity and into the abdominal ("the guts") cavity where it attaches to the stomach) in the thoracic cavity somewhere. I did not see a cut esophogas in there anywhere but that is the only logiccal explanation I can come up with. I think that since he ran for quite a while after the shot, the food must have worked its way up from the stomach, into the esophogus and into the chest cavity through the cut in the esophogus.

I've seen it happen even in straight on broadsides. If you sever the esophagus and the deer upchucks while it's in it's death throes it can make a mess of the chest cavity.
