MIDWEST ELK

where is the best place in the Midwest (preferably around WI) for elk hunting? i know they have elk in michigan, but i havent heard anything good about that place. im really lookin to find a place to get me a nice big elk. and it would also be prefereable if there is no BOW ONLY or Shotgun only restrictions.

Nearest huntable elk herd to Wisconsin may be in Western South Dakota.

Wisconsin's token elk herd was a publicity stunt to use tax dollars to get sportsman to vote for then govenor Tommy Thompson.

there supposedly is a nice elk herd in Kentucky. there should be 7,500 elk there by 2008. there arent many tags available now, but they say they will give around 1,500 once the population reaches the 7,500 mark

Yup, and Kentucky started its Elk program 3 years after Wisconsin .... and Wisconsin now has approximately, what, 140 elk? Currently, Kentucky has harvested more elk than Wisconsin has in the wild.

There has been talk of Elk in WI...here's a few links that explain it better than I can:

http://dnr.wi.gov/org/land/wildlife/elk/Plan.htm

There is actually a committee in WI regarding Elk, called Wisconsin Elk Study Committee (WESCO), but what they're doing these days I have no idea.
