Rend Lake or Shawnee National Forest

Has anyone hunted these two areas. At this point, I'm just a lowly squirrel hunter, but don't want to make the track out to these places if they aren't worth the hunt.

Thanks.

Lots of deer and lots of acres to hunt as well. Scout an area and you should be on deer.

I hunt Shawnee...a lot of deer...the most important thing is getting out there and scouting during the offseason. During the firearm season there are definitely a lot of other hunters so when you are scouting keep that in mind...in my opinion you are better off finding a spot where you have to walk awhile to get in...any easy accessible spots are going to be very crowded during the firearm season. Invest in a game cart.

I believe Shawnee is Federally owned land...correct. Does one go by state guidelines for game to hunt this area? Any checking in or out??

At least the part of Shawnee I hunt there is no checking in/out required. The typical state rules apply.
