Any Early Season Luck in WI???

Anyone get anything??

I hunt in an Earn a Buck zone and managed to hit a doe on Sunday of opening weekend. Moved just as I released. Hit it, saw it run 60 yards and go down in some tall CRP. Waited 15 minutes, saw no movement, and went to get it. Walked up with bow at the ready and looked to find it. She was there...jumped up and ran!!! Arrow was there, covered with dark red blood. Heard a sort of sucking or slurping sound coming from deer as it ran.

Waited until morning to look for it. Found blood...but no deer!!! Of course, with all of the foliage and CRP grass, I might have walked five feet from it and not seen it.

So a doe is dead, but I have to get another one to be "legal" for a bow buck.

Looked for about half a day. The blood trail wasn't real clear...small drop here and there...then it couldn't be found after trail led into woods.

Should have left her a little longer than 15 minutes.

She's got to be there somewhere. Too bad you couldn't seal the deal. Hope you have better luck next time..

No luck this weekend for me. Saw a couple does on Sat morning about 80 yards behind my stand, and that was it for the weekend. My partner saw a total of 7 does and 6 bucks this weekend, none of the bucks big enough to shoot, and none of the does close enough to shoot. We're huting a new piece of land for the first time though, so we're still trying to get a feel for what the deer movement is going to be like.

Set up my CamTrakker this weekend so hopefully I get some photos to help do a little scouting for me.

I did see a deer on Sunday AM. It was dark and very windy. Walking in CRP to my stand. All of a sudden a deer jumped, snorted and ran away. All I saw and heard was a big deer. Not sure if it was a buck or doe. Didn't see anything else that day, but it was extremely windy.. Hoping for more this weekend..

South West WI, Very warm and winds out of the S, S.E. - Hunted Sat. Sun and Mon. - Saw deer every sit on Sat and Sunday. Numerous does and three different bucks around 8 pointers. No shots taken, would have had to been a pretty decent buck to shoot - way to wam. Saw a couple of dozen rubbs and a few scrapes being scratched.

Would have to agree, 15 minutes is way quick unless you actually see the deer drop.

Whereabouts in SW Wisconsin are you hunting? I'm about 5 miles South of Lancaster. Just outside the CWD zone. ;)

I got invited up to Buffalo County to hunt for the first time. It is earn a buck up there. Saw plenty of deer....Mostly nice BUCKS !!!!

Almost, but no ethical shot on a doe Saturday night. Very warm in stand, but always better than being at work.

Had my chance Saturday evening. Over estimated the distance, and shot right over the top of the back. Sitting in ground blind, no other trees or cover.

I spent 5 hrs. Sunday looking for the arrow. Even got a metal detector, no luck.

I will be out again on Sunday, supposed to be cooler. If I can get her down, I'll let ya know, I'm also in an earn-a-buck.

Went out Saturday afternoon with 3 other guys, and our sons, unit 69. The boys were not bowhunting yet. Camped out over night in Tents, had a great time. I only saw one doe out of range. The other three guys shot 5 does. Going back up there first week of November for the rut.

Was out last night. Couldn't get the does to come in close enough, had a fork buck though. 20 yrd and quartering away. I would have taken him (first deer with bow), but got to get that doe first with this EAB. Will try again tonight I hope, maybe I'll have a better story tommorow.

Until then, BE SAFE!

HNIJUSTIN - I hunt in Vernon Co. I think I'm spelling it correct, it's right by Westby (sp?).
I'm from Michigan's Upper Peninsula so I a bit new to the towns and spellings.

Hunted Sunday the 26th, early AM had a Spike (3PT??) come up behind me. He came from directly behind a pine tree, so I did not see him until he was 10yards away. We had a staredown for about 5 minutes, then he moved off to my right. I started to get my bow ready for the shot, but he came around the tree too quick and caught my movement. Since I have never harvested with my bow, I would have shot him. Oh well, it is still good to see deer. Saw a doe and a fawn about 1 hour later, but they stayed about 50 yards away. Overall it was a great day..

This past Wed. evening had a few deer out in the field @ 200+ yards. On Thurs. had a Doe and a yearling @ 42 yards. I got the shakes and ready to go, they were coming right to my soft grunts! I got busted and they split. Also had a nice buck across the field. Don't know how big but I could see his polished white rack from one end of the field to the other! Nice one. Monday night I had deer snorting everywhere around me. They came into the field Just out of range @ 36 yards! I didn't feel good about the shot so I waited. I had 9 different deer come dowm the same trail but forked off just out of range. It was a great hunt, started off warm, kinda sucked hanging a stand!:)

Shot a doe last friday evening, 12 yd shot and a very short recovery. Could have shot a doe last night to earn my gun buck tag, but as she was coming in I realized I hadn't yet purchased my gun license yet, so needless to say I had to let her walk. Also, seen a couple bucks but nothing real big to get the heart pumping. They moved early last night, about 6:00 the deer started to move into the turnip/pea field.

I'm in college and I wasn't able to hunt until the second weekend of this years bow season. The first night out I saw 12 deer, 2 very small bucks, every deer was within bow range. I ended up shooting a decent doe since I'm in the earn a buck area, I made a good shot on her, I left her lay for a hour and went to find her. I couldn't find a drop of blood so left her lay the night. I got her through the lungs and she ran 40 yards, never bleed a drop. The rest of the weekend I saw around 15 deer, all does, most close enough to shot. I'm probably one of the few hunters that's happy Wisconsin has gone to earn a buck, the buck doe ratio is so incredibly off in my area something had to be done. As for bucks, I saw a very nice 8 pointer before season, at least a 18 inch spread with long tines, have picture and video of him. Some very nice bucks around, just a matter of time. Enjoy your hunting, the best of luck to everyone.

I have got one doe so far. Last week Thursday.
I have been too busy to get out. Sat one time since then and seen 2 does but they were too far.
Seen 3 bucks opening day but they also were too far. 2 of these were shooters.
Maybe I will get out this weekend if everything goes good.
Good luck everyone!!!

No luck here in Dodge county. I have been out morning and night with only 1 little deer in sight. It seems the deer are staying in the marsh and in the corn. hopefully the farmers will start cutting soon!! I have seen many huge bucks at night with the old spotlight.[:@]

Went out on Sat. the 2nd on my folks land in northern Adams county. I was looking to shoot a doe, as temperatures we ideal for curing and butchering. Had a medium sized doe and her fawn coming in to feed on acorns. Fawn was about 10 feet from the stand while the doe was around forty yards when my dad and bro came through the woods on the ol 9n from duck hunting!!! Needless to say the deer split. Oh well!
I'm glad we're in the T-Zone this year. I always liked the idea of being able to harvest a doe early in the season, as it provides some reassurance to my skills as an archer, as well as providing some much needed meat for the freezer!! It seems that the years when I've been able to shoot a doe(wheter T-Zone hunting or by use of a bonus tag) I feel a lot calmer during the rest of the season, which makes it a little easier when passing up on the smaller bucks.

Anyway, good luck to all going out this weekend!! I'm glad I've found this forum, as I sure like to talk hunting!!

I got my second doe of the archery season to fill my gun EAB tag Friday evening. Shot her at around 18 yards Friday evening and seconds after the arrow went through her a young 3 point walked in. It was pretty entertaining, he sniffed the arrow which was full of blood and slowly backed off, then went to it again to smell of it one last time before backing up and deciding to get the heck out of there. Now it's time to wait for a decent buck to present an opportunity. Have yet to see much for size in the area while hunting, just a this three and a five point. Good luck to everyone, rut is just around the corner!

I arrowed a doe last friday (10/9) to get my EAB tag. So far this year we have seen a ton of young bucks, especially alot of spikes. Also some nice older bucks. Passed on a nice eight with a sixteen or so inch spread. We hunt in Shawno county. The deer a really hitting the acorns hard and there is a bumper crop of acorns. They are browsing the oak ridges early and staying till dark before entering the fields..........dabow
