Due to Ohio's new no antlerless law in the late season, I think I'll primarily be confined to a tree stand on a very small piece of private land that I have access to.

It's my least favorite way to hunt and I'd much rather be out walking on a large chunk of public land.

However, I always love to chase doe during the late seasons, and I can no longer do that in Ohio now. So I'll sit my butt in the ladder stand I have set up and see what comes by.

the good news is that this spot is usually good for seeing a few doe on most sits.

jake you can take anterless deer on private land . check your regulations book .YOU CANNOT TAKE A ANTERLESS DEER ON ANY PUBLIIC LAND.
REPEAT YOU CAN SHOOT A BUCK OR DOE ON PRIVATE LAND BUT ONLY BUCKS ONLY ON PUBLIC LAND.

Bocajnala 01-05-2019 12:31 AM

Yes, I'm saying I'm stuck in a tree stand (my least favorite way to hunt) on a small piece of private land in order to hunt doe.

I would rather be chasing doe on my feet on a large piece of public land. But thats no longer an option.

sorry jake misunderstood you. can't tell you how many people or hunters thought anterless season was closed statewide after dec 2 . in fact i shot a doe @ 200 yrds @ 530 last nite & took it in to a check in station & had a another hunter call the game warden & reported to him that i shot a doe . dude did'nt know the rules . odnr shows up & questions me where i took the doe on private or public. which i tell him private land & he knows where i hunt & looks to the other hunter & tell's him he could of created a big mess. the hunter came over & appolgized to me . i told him it's ok just read the hunting rules & regulations next time .

Mr. Shaffer, there's still allot of confusion about the new law. I've even spoken with a few older hunters here recently that hadn't even heard about it.

I suppose that if you're not online and don't read the regulations booklet and just assume everything is that same, that you wouldn't know.

Glad to hear you got a doe

I was out both days 230-dark.

Haven't seen anything to shoot at yet. Two beautiful days to be out though.

heading out today mon the 7 in freezing rain definitely will be in the built ground shed until noon & when it warms to 50 deg & stops raining .will do some stalking then until about 4 & back to the blind for a evening hunt . let 3 small ones walk right by me last nite @ 540 5 minutes left to shooting time . biggest 1 no bigger than 80 lbs. other 2 about 60 lbs. the farmer said he would of enjoyed 1 of them. so i may take 1 for the farmer today for a land tag deer.really has been a great weather season so far . tomorrow calling for rain snow late in the afternoon.

Bocajnala 01-07-2019 03:16 AM

Good luck, sounds like you've got some good hunting spots.

a matter of fact jake i do it's next to findley state park the 3 area's i hunt & there is no hunting for deer in that state park. i had 3 great contacts to get permission to hunt there . i love hunting those 3 farms . 2 of which i do yearly clean up in the spring for these guys. cut vines & dead tree's & etc .

Bocajnala 01-07-2019 03:25 PM

I've been in the area on the motorcycle a few times . Nice area.

Skunked again tonight. Watched some fox squirrels through the afternoon .

Last day tomorrow

I'm gonna give up a couple hours of sleep today to get into the woods a little longer.

Will be home and in bed by 830 and will try to get up around 11 and in the woods by noon till dark.

Last day, got to try something! 230-dark hasn't been working.

well i got skunked too last nite. did'nt see a deer nor did i hear a shot not even a discharge shot. yea today is the last day heading out now for the whole day . this afternoon the temps drop fast from 55 to 30 by sunset. hopefully they will be active & feeding during this morning.good luck if you are heading out. jake what kind of motorcycle do you have? i've got a triglide due to my bum hip. findley state park is in southern lorain county on state rt 58. if your ever out that way let me know & be sure to stop @ chet & frans country store great little gun shop in the back.we will have to exchange phone numbers on pm if i can fiquire how to get into it

Bocajnala 01-08-2019 04:57 PM

I got your pm and relied.

The deer cooperated tonight...

I had rain, hail, lightning and thunder, sunshine and extremely high winds. But stuck it out. I saw two. The biggest stopped at 30 yards, and I lined up the crosshairs and squeezed that trigger. All I heard was "pffffft" the doe quickly leaped into the brush.

Part of late season muzzleloader I suppose. I pulled the breech plug, and completely reloaded and waited out the rest of the night.

It was a fun four days of hunting. And I'm thankful to have gotten an opportunity, even if it didn't work out.

t.shaffer 01-09-2019 03:55 AM

yes it was fun for 4 days but what a wicked ending to yesterday. jake there was a tornado near mosquito creek yesterday around 10 30 am. f-1 style but was confirmed .did'nt see anything yesterday @ all . here 1 or 2 discharge shots around 6pm. first 2 days were nice weather the last 2 no so nice especially yesterday afternoon. will ck my pm & get back to you soon

Bocajnala 01-09-2019 04:14 AM

The tornado was ten road miles from where I was. Much closer the way the crow flies I'd imagine .

I had no idea that was going on, but my uncle sent me pictures from his porch later that night of it.

Kinda bummed I didn't get that big doe now. But that's hunting.

Still enjoyed myself.

well the numbers are in the the 4 day muzzleloader season is in total was 14,168 lorain county was up by 2 & total was up by 1200 from last year.

t.shaffer 01-15-2019 03:02 AM

just recalulated the numbers & only 900 more deer were taken. i also wonder what the count would of been if does were legal on public land ?
