Default public land in southern wisconsin

I finally moved here in march and after talking to a few people looks like IL isn't what I thought it would be for public land hunting. So now I've shifted to Wisconsin which lot of people tell me they hunt. Where are some public land in southern wisconsin?

Depends on how far you want to travel and what kind of hunting you want to do? In Northern Illinois, if you want to get away to hunt, Southern Illinois has some great land. If its Bow hunting, you'll find spots where you won't see anyone for days if you want and some nice bucks. Wisconsin there are some guys who kills some pretty good bucks in Southern Wisconsin but they really work for them. If you do your research and cross reference a few different websites and such, you can find some spots on the internet. There are deer to be found, they just require a little more work and some outside the box tactics.

Look here (especially at state wildlife areas):

http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/lands/

A lot of southern Wisconsin is in the CWD deer-eradication zone, so gun tags are given out liberally, and you can imagine the effect on population. I'd look a little farther north for deer.

I haven't been to Ws. for about 4 years now BUT from 1958 on I have no idea how much time I've spent Bowhunting up there. I prefer the areas close to & all along the Mi. border. Did lots around Boulder Jct., Eagle river, Hayward N & then Black River Falls, Necedah areas in middle with little in the S. part of the state. Always had a great time. Lots of National Forests & Lumber Co. land + some state forests. A little research can give you an idea of pressured areas. S. Ill. is about the best when it comes to Public but if you look at their listings of public land you might concentrate on the BOWHUNTING ONLY areas.. BIG area doesn't always mean it's the best bowhunting. Good Luck.

I have done quite well on trophy bucks in southern Wisconsin... One of my favorite resources is the Southern Wisconsin all outdoors atlas. It shows all the public land even what the DNR site don't, and shows current MFL propertys which are private land but open to the public per a tax agreement. Here is a link to the book:

I think BukMastr saying he has done well with bucks on public land in Southern WI is a huge understatement. Anything he says I highly advise you listen too. I owe at least one of my buck to his advice.
