Coyote hunting

Going to coyote hunt for the first time. I would like to keep the fur so I don't know what gun to use. I have a .22 a .270 I also have a 20 gauge and a 410 gauge which one would be the best if I want to keep the fur?

I'd use the .270. That is my rifle of choice for deer and i've put down a few coyotes as well with it. If you are going to be at very close range (under 60 yards) you could use a .22 but it may be a bit light. If it were going out for coyotes I'd probably take along my .270.

Of what you listed I'd also have to pick the .270. Not ideal, but it will work.

But of course the 270 will make a bigger hole. I'm no expert hear, but was recently reading someone advocating a 12 Gauge with No. 4 buckshot, so maybe a case can be made for the 20 with buckshot (and maybe someone who knows a bit more about it than me will have something to say about it :s4: -- just throwing out an idea here!)

a big gun will mess the hide up. Im a trapper and i use a 22 with a regular bullet( not hollow point) shoot it like you would a deer right behind shoulder. hope that helps

If your calling them in use the 22 or 270 if your baiting use the 410 slug or home defense load or 20 gauge with buck shot.

For close shots the 20 Guage will work the best and do less pelt/hide damage...you'd be better off getting a .22 Magnum,.17 HMR or .17 Fireball,.22 Hornet,.204 or .223 with a light bullet in 35-40 or 55 grain!

As Johnwb82 mentioned....maybe the .410 with a slug to reach out further? The .22LR with say the CCI Stinger Hollow Points but thats pushing it and You may have several run off unless You have a Semi-Automatic and get 2 or 3 shots off?

Coyotes are one tough critter, looks like your under gunned with the .22 and a bit over gunned with the .270...my go to gun is my Savage .204, to me its a perfect round with minimal pelt damage and drops em in their tracks! Take the .270 and have fun!

Not totally new to guns here, but how would a shotgun slug or buck shot at close range do less damage than a .270? It seems like it would tear a bigger hole or alot more small holes
