Blue Tongue

I had a cousin text me the other day and say that he had a dead 10 point buck out by his pond. He called the warden and she came and inspected it and said that it had blue tongue and it's been going around this year. She told him not to eat any meat from any deer he killed this year. I checked all over our conservation site (I live in NW Missouri) and saw no warnings or stories of any sort about this subject. I would think if there was such a strong suggestion to not eat deer meat this year it would be posted somewhere. I think it is BS. I know he is not playing a joke on me so I think somewhere the story is messed up. Has anyone heard anything on the subject this year.

If they didn't want you to eat any meat from the deer you shot this year it you would have heard about it. Blue tongue kills quick, unless you shot a deer that was skin and bones and looked sick I wouldn't worry about it.

They have found EHD in deer in two counties here in southern MI just in the last couple weeks. By deer season there should be no problem because, as stated by fastetti, it kills quickly. Any deer alive once the deer seasons open should be fine, but if one looks like it has problems you obviously need to use a little common sense.

Southern Indiana had a bad case of blue tongue a few years ago. You are not suppose to eat the meat of an infected deer. Not all deer will become affected and you can easily spot a sick deer vs a healthy one

I figured it was kind of silly for a warden to make a blanket statment like that. It makes me wonder if she really said that or if my cousin was exagerating.
