Baiting ? for Wi

Anyone heard yet if baiting or no baiting will be allowed this fall?
I know the board or something to that affect was suppose to meet real soon and if they didnt then baiting would be allowed. Or am I way off here?

Thanks
Peak :D

JACAR is meeting on it today. It started at 9 this morn. From what I' ve heard, they allowed public testimony. So far most of it has been against the ban. A guy I know from another site was following it. I was not there so I can' t say much more. I' ll be sure and post if I hear anything.

Without reading your MJ article. I believe it was voted down 6-4. DNR has until the 29th to come up with a compramise or there will be no ban state wide.[:' (]

I have not been a fan of the WI DNR and their deer management policies (or lack thereof) for a long time. That has been evidenced in this forum on threads too numerous to mention. This includes much of the DNR policy with regard to CWD.

BUT, in this case, a ban on feeding and baiting is probably the simplest, least invasive change that the DNR could put into place in an attempt to check the spread of CWD. Unlike some of the more foolish, pie in the sky ideas---i.e. " eradicating" all of the deer in a huge area--- a ban on baiting and feeding should be reasonable to enforce and can be " sold" to most hunters. We don' t know if CWD is spread by contact around baiting piles for sure, but some evidence seems to suggest that it is possible. Given that and given the fact that it costs virtually nothing to implement such a ban, it seems to me that a continuation of the ban on baiting and feeding is a good precaution.

While deer MIGHT make some contact with each other at a bait pile, I don' t think 2 gallons of bait can/will draw THAT many deer at one time. They should have taken the compromise. Now we are up to what...10 gallons? Now THAT might bring in more deer.
PERSONALLY, I don' t think your gonna get deer NOT to come in contact with each other. Between breeding and fighting, what goes on at bait piles most likely doesn' t do more harm than that.
I WOULD like to see a ban on baiting (and ENFORCE IT THIS TIME!!!!) if for no other reason than to keep the deer from becomming so DAMN nocturnal...easy food means no need to spend more time looking for it.
DNR is feeling the crunch from the budget??? how about multiplying some of the fines a few times? A nice $100 per gallon over fine would be a good start.

Today, the dnr got their ears pinned down by the jcrar, rightfully so. They voted for the 2 gallon limit instead of 10 and unlimited feed piles as wanted by the DNR and the NRB. The dept. whined about how hard enforcement would be, but the committee wasn' t biting on that lame excuse. The 22 county ban will remain for now.

Here in Illinois we used to be able to feed the deer, but not bait. They passed the no feeding law, which I thought was silly, considering the low number of sick deer up on the border.
Where I work (near St. Louis) the people use to come out and feed the deer every night. It was such an attraction that they created a deer park by a refinery nearby for people to come watch the deer around the feeders that they had put in. Right after they opened the deer park, they had to remove the feeders. My workplace posted no feeding signs.
I don' t understand why they put a statewide ban on feeding in IL, when WI can' t even keep a ban on baiting or feeding.
