15 yr. old boy kills mountain lion in ne. Nebr.

Last Sat, was opening day of our rifle hunt. A 15 old boy from Wayne Nebr had to shoot a mountain lion that was about to attack him near Creighton,Ne. The paper said the lion was within 10ft. of him, thats a little close for comfort. We do have a few lions in the state, mostly in the western panhandle. Creighton is where I growd up,and have a farm we own and hunt on,10miles from the town. I always tell the people in our hunting party to watch their backs,we don't use stands or blinds, just sit on hills overlooking draws and creeks. We saw mountain lions on our farm in the mid 60s and early 70s, told the wardens about them and they just sort of laughed at us, and told us they where bobcats.

Although I have never personally had an encounter with a lion yet, their sightings are becoming more frequent in eastern NE along the rivers. There have been sightings on the outskirts of many towns including one killed in St. Paul in which I live very near. Im scared of my own shadow most of the time and will probably be buying pepper spray...just in case

I grew up south of Smithfield (south of Lexington) and we've had quite a few sightings around there. My dad was walking what we call our west pasture, which is bordered by corn on the north, and came across a big area of grass with blood everywhere and only a few bones laying around. We're pretty sure it wasn't from a coyote.

A couple of guys I know came across one on top of deer during opening weekend a few years ago...this was south of Elwood.

I remember when I lived in Bellevue and there were reports of a mountain lion in Papillion/Omaha in '04/05. The Game & Parks Commission kept saying in the papers that folks were seeing a bobcat or two and were mistaken. Then the dang thing got hit on the road and killed. It was a young male that had followed the Papio into the city. There was no denying it then.
