How to find leases
 

Hows it going? I just took up hunting 2 years ago. Still learning things. Had a couple mildly successful hunts. I was wondering if I could get some advice on how to find hunting leases. Just looking for a small lease I could scout and hunt myself. Figure it would be very rewarding and possibly cheaper than paying outfitters. Any advice would be appreciated.

Don't count on finding one through the many leasing internet sites. They are all overpriced. Unfortunately the alternative is not easy. You have to get to know some local landowners, ask if they would be interested in leasing their property, and if not, who do they know who might have an interest. In business we use the 10/3/1 approach. Ask 10 landowners if they have an interest, 3 will actually talk to you about it, and 1 will be willing to lease the property. For this to work, the 10 landowners must be qualified: personally be able to make the decision to lease, not be tied up in an existing lease, not have family hunting commitments on the property. I don't know if you are aware of this but it seems to be easier to find places to archery hunt than gun hunt. Land owners will usually let you bow hunt for no charge. Knock on doors, be polite, and be willing to do a little work for them. Good luck.
