looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
just kidding!!!:Dbut are you kidding. they raised nonresident fees again this year. it now costs right at $550 for a tag. thats silly

RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
Well, I live in Illinois and always will hunt here. I think it's a crime what Iowa, Illinois, and other states charge non residents. They want tourism?? I think deer hunting brings in just as muchmoney once you figure tags/permits and the what the hunters spend on gas, food, and what not. Just my opinion......
|
RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
I know quite a few IL guys goto Iowa to hunt whitetails...
$550 even sounds high to me for a non-res deer tag! I think iowa is growing in popularity as a destination state, and with less deer tags to go around, I assume they have to limit them somehow, last I heard a non-res will draw Iowa every other year...whereas I know in IL if a non-res applies, they get a tag. |
RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
It is getting out of control and one of these days the tag fees will get to the point where they start to really lose hunters. I almost gag when I fork over 550 bucks (it was 500 just 3 years ago) for an elk tag in Co. but to pay almost that much for a deer tag in the mid west....come on

RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
i heard they even raised the resident tags too. $550 for a tag is outrageous! here in wisconsin a nonresident tag is $160

Go one state north and it's $140 for a non-resident tag. That's rediculous.
|
RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
ive been planning a public land hunt toiowa, but the fee increase is a deal breaker for me.im just not going to pay that much.thats 200 more than illinois.that 200 will pay for my share of lodging and gas money.so,i will keep making a trip to illinois every year, until i can no longer afford that.

RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
theres quite a bit here in the southern part of wisconsin too. i hunt in southwest wisconsin and there is some great bucks here. thank you farm land:D

i have seen more deerthis spring then i saw all of last year combine. has anybody else seen this two.
|
RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
i havent seen very many this spring but seen a lot last fall. usually when we start planting there out in the fields. we should have the fields planted next weekend
|
RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
Here in Central Wi, where I live and bowhunt(Waupaca CO.) Deer hunting was supposedly quite poor but with the game camera There was 21 different bucks that came to our feeder. I did get a fine 11 pointer the day after x-mas. Seems the fields this Spring held a lot of deer.

RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
Iowa can keep there deer tags for that price!
|
RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
Wisconsin should do this.
|
RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
hey just find a buddy there and move there for a month or so before you go :DI knew a guy from indiana that moved to ky during hunting season. He had land down then and built him alittle shack and changed his id to ky guest the 15.00 each state for id change was worth the money he safed.

RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
Great, now they will all come up here!
|
RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
As an Iowa resident, I think it's ridiculous. I wouldn't give $500+for a tag to kill a deer. A resident pays $50+ (tag, licence, and habitat stamp)which is to damn high.
The non-resident priceis a week's stay at a hotel, with tags, food and gasfor non-residents insome states. Eventually our herd will develop a disease due to losses of hunting ground, the high fees, and the lack of interest by the next generation. I believe our number of hunters were already down quite a bit in 2008, I can only imagine it will get worse in the upcoming years. |
RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
racksnbeards,
It's truly good to hear a resident of Iowa say that. Yourarely hear someone from a state say that unless they were an outfitter or somone that makes income off of non residents hunters. I totally agree with you and I had planned on a trip withinthe next two years to try and hunt Iowa, but this is a deal breaker for me as well. I wil not venture to another state for anything more expensive than Illinois. Illinois last year had a difficult time of selling their permits for total with license and habitat in the are od $450. I will not pay over $500 for a whitetail license/permit. I will stay home or seek out better options. Wish Iowa good luck with its revenue and wish the business owners/outfitters good luck of recouping the lost income. |
RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
At $550 it would be way to steep for me to check into that is for sure.. Here a nonresident combination hunting and fishing is only $137. The deer numbers are low but we have large deer so if you get lucky enough to bag one it is more than worth it..For just hunting big game the cost is $102 so if you are not up here early scouting and do not have time to fish then the cost is a little less. But again $550 dollars to hunt deer, that is rediculis in my opion..

RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
midsouth,
It's a common opinion were I'm located. Don't get me wrong we have lost some excellent hunting ground to non-resident lease's or them buying the ground, so their are some mixed emotions. But I have been fortunate enough to still be able to hunt some private land. What I can't do because of the higher fee's is hunt Iowawith family from other states, my son wont get to enjoy the same deer camp experience with his cousins as I did with mine. They can't afford it, and they shouldn't have to pay the same price for a deer tag, as they would for a freezer full of beef. |
RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
Well that sucks! I was planning on heading up there next year, but for that price, I don't know if I can swing it. A $550 tag plus paying an outiftter will make it $3000 minimum.
|
RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
I hadn't paid much attention to other things but they are also raising the price of a preference point from $10 to $50. So, if you buy your 2 points to get a tag and then your tag it will cost $650 for everything!
|
RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
More deer for me! Most out-of-state hunters that hunt around me are jerks. They don't follow rules, and they ignore no trespassing signs. I don't want to generalize all non-resident hunters, but can't some learn some class!
|
RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
I was born and raised in Iowa and all my family still lives in Iowa.Dumb enough to fall in love with a woman from Virginia and move there. Can't afford to pay the non-resident fee either. Guess I will just have to pay my 18 bucks here in Virginia where I get a tag good for 3 bucks, 3 does, 3 turkeys and one bear.
|
RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
Does anyone know if non-resident students get their tags at resident price? I've been looking at grad schools in Iowa but this might put an end to that.

RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
Taken from the 2008/2009 Iowa Hunting Regulations book
REQUIREMENTS FOR PURCHASING RESIDENT LICENSES Hunters must meet at least one of the following criteria to purchase a resident hunting or trapping license in Iowa: 1. Have an Iowa driver’s license or Iowa non-operator’s identification card and have physically resided in Iowa at least 30 consecutive days immediately before applying for or purchasing a resident license. 2. Be registered to vote in Iowa. In order to do so, you must meet all of the qualifications to register to vote as outlined in Iowa Code chapter 48A.5. 3. Be a full-time student at an educational institution located in Iowa and reside in Iowa while attending the educational institution. 4. Be a nonresident under 18 years of age whose parent is a resident of Iowa. 5. Be a member of the armed forces of the United States serving on active duty, and: (a) is stationed in Iowa or (b) is stationed outside of Iowa, claims residency in Iowa, and has filed an Iowa income tax return for the preceding tax year. RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
They charge that much because they can. It's Iowa after all...

RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
Well I love hunting in Iowa but they can kiss my a#$. Everytime I've been there it has been FANTASTIC hunting. A Non Res point is $50 now, I went to buy one tonight as this is the last day to purchase one and it jumped form $10. You need 2 points to get drawn for an Archery Licence in Zone 4 so you can add another 100 bucks to the crazy $550 licence. Guess what, I'll be hunting Ohio. Over the counter and some good bucks there too.
Nick as far as making a statment about most out of state unters are Jerks! Well I have a problem with that, All I hear is from the locals is how they kill two or three bucks a year with landowner permits and bending the rules a little. Why can the locals kill like that and you can call the out of staters Jerks. Why did the Governor get involved in the cost of non resident hunting fees. What does DNR do?? |
RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
My 4 Iowa pref points and money will stay in Illinois this year. Heck I get 2 buck tags here for $26/each. I wish all states would just price everything the same for everyone. It's just out of control.

RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
Iowa is only hurting their own. My buddy runs a small operation and has numerous people cancelling their hunts. They picked a bad time to up license fees with the economy and all. When my group goes out to Iowa, we dump alot of money into the local economy. Walmart, food joints, hotels, carwash, grocery stores, sportshops, fuel. Whats funny is they raised the licenses midstream, I paid less the first week of May, than my buddy paid the last week they were onsale. This could be our last year, unless I become a resident for 30 consecutive days before Nov.1 ! I have a problem with Nicks comments also, but I no longer entertain that kind of b.s. There are jackasses everywhere Nick. In my state and yours.

There are jackasses everywhere Nick. In my state and yours. Taken from the IDNR site: DES MOINES - Beginning July 1, the minimum requirement to claim Iowa as a state of residence will increase from 30 consecutive days where Iowa is the principle and primary residence, to 90 consecutive days, before someone may purchase a resident hunting, fishing or trapping privilege. The new residency requirements were approved during the 2009 legislative session and signed by Iowa Governor Chet Culver. It becomes effective July 1. The new residency rule also specifically excludes people from claiming residency for a special or temporary purpose which includes engaging in hunting, fishing or trapping. Owning land in Iowa, having an Iowa driver's license or registering a vehicle or to vote does not mean a person is an Iowa resident. |
RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
I too was shocked to see the increase in fees. I was planning a hunt for my 40th birthday in 2010 and logged in to purchase a 3rd preference point but couldn't do it - principal won out. I previously purchased preference points in 07 and 08.
Can someone tell mewhat happens to those? |
RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
Kingfish, I did the exact thing you did. I got a preference point last year but could not do it this year on principle. They are getting out of control as far as how much they are gouging non-residents. I hope no non-residents get license and permits for that state. See how they like losing out on all the money into their system. They can keep their permits for all I care
|
RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
racksnbeards thanks for the heads up, looks like some guys actually tried this.
|
RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
Thats the idea, Iowa doesn't want non-residents for deer hunting. My wife is from Iowa and her Dad owns some land but I don't even try to get a permit. Pheasant hunting is good tho

RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
A lot of states are jacking their fees up, but with Iowa, the fees were already too exspensive. They gotaccustomed to the money they were already getting and when they(had) to raise fees for extra funds like other states the permits and licenses have gotten out of my and other hunter price range. I bet you will see other states with lower fees and somewhat somewhat similar deer quality get a lot more attention. I knowthey will from me.The one's that will suffer from all of these increases infees will be the businesses that depend on out of state hunters in the fall and winter.
|
RE: looks like i'll be poaching in iowa this year
Doubt it will happen, but it would be funny (for the DNR)if NO non-residents applied and theywere out all of that money. Just feel sorry for all the local business that will suffer. They are already hurting in alot of areas because their pheasant hunting has gone down the drain. If things stay the same with the drawing odds, a bow tag will cost: 2 points @$50 each plus the $560 for a tag= $660 dollars for a deer. Just can't get over how they think people can afford thator will pay that for a deer.

Maybe this is how Obama plans to pay for healthcare plan.
