I'd almost bet it was slow in Pope County. I heard a lot less shots being taken than normal.

71,894 deer killed the first season. Over 85,000 the previous season.

Wow, and the slide continues just as in archery. I hope the state finally sees this as acceptable and doesn't do anything stupid next season.

It certainly has nothing to do with low deer numbers, at least in my neck of the woods. If more folks had shot does, the kill would have been over 100K.

I agree, on the way back to Chicago I stopped at a rest stop and while admiring another gentlemans buck in his trailer, I noticed there was no confirmation number written on the tag, then I glansed at all of their 4 deer and not one had a confirmation number on it. Come on, how long does it take to phone it?! It took my buddy and I a combined 6 minutes to do both of ours.

Who says they didn't call them in when they got home?

"Hunters using the online or phone-in system must register their harvest by 10 p.m. on the day they take the deer."

The conspiracy that more people are not calling them in will continue until a better process is established...

Why do people think that all hunters took their deer to the check-in stations when we had them?

Why would less people call them in than who took them to the check-in stations?

Poachers are poachers - I do not think the call-in system created that many more of these knuckleheads.

BTW, I am in favor of the check-in stations.
I'd rather pay $5 more for each tag in order to pay for this service.
It was a part of our deer hunting heritage to gather together to see other people's deer along with the immediate satisfaction of getting your pin.
Was also nice to know, how old they thought the deer was.

This is all gone - due to mismanagement and money.

He told me that he had gotten his buck opening morning when he got back to his truck. This was Saturday afternoon.

I do agree, I would gladly pay and extra $5 on a tag to have a check in station again. Michigan out of state tags are around $150 for a buck and Wisconsin is $160 for a combo. I would gladly add the extra $5 to my tag to have a check station, not only to check in the deer but to see what the other hunters are bringing in.

Weather was perfect. Movement was terrible. Younger bucks chasing does, big ones not moving at all--lot less shooting heard this year, and everbody grumbling in Montgomery County.
