RE: Indiana Hunters
Why am I not seeing any deer at all? I am new and put my stands up kinda late along some well traveled trails. This is my first year deer hunting and I just wanted some tips.

RE: Indiana Hunters
I just got back from hunting Kosioscko(sp) County. Some great property up there. About 9 of us did a deer drive at 1:30 in the afternoon. I sat down on the ground on the edge of a small woodlot while a few other guys walked the riverbottom down below. Had 9 deer run right to me, one was an 8 point buck. Did not realize it was a buck until he was right to me, had a small rack. Anyways, 2 of the guys on the bottom got 2 huge doe. Ended up seeing about 40 deer total this afternoon, but only the 1 buck. I normally don't do a deer drive but i guess the land owners do it on this place pretty often so i at least tried it out, plus they were trying hard to get this guy from Michigan a deer. He came down just to deer hunt the weekend. I still would rather just sit in a stand all day though. Hopefully i am invited back, it was some of the best deer land i have ever stepped foot on.

RE: Indiana Hunters

RE: Indiana Hunters
I'm a little late to the party, but here is a photo of my buck this year off a game cam 5 days before I took him opening morning. We did not download this picture until several days after he was in the freezer:
![]() Opening morning was miserable, I was open and exposed in a chair like I normally am. I let a forkhorn go early, and passed on a couple does. Then this guy and a slightly bigger buck came by chasing some does into the next ditch over but never came within 400 yds. After about 30min I was still trying to decide how I could get on them when some bedded does got up and led them off the property. I was wet and freezing so I packed up and decided to walk around the perimeter of the field (about a 1-hour trip) slowly to get downwind of that area as I knew there were more deer bedded in that ditch. I just about made it when a medium-sized buck walked out and busted me. I dropped down and got the muzzeloader on the bipod but could not reach my rangefinder without spooking him. Of course I guessed short and shot under him (he was at 275 yds and I shot for 200-225). He and about 10 does busted out and were gone. I headed down the ditch to verify I missed then continued down it toward my truck, when here comes this buck back from chasing those does away. I got ready and got the rangefinder out FIRST this time, ranged the ditch he had to cross at 225. He got to it and was very cautious, spend about 5min scoping the field before he came across. Once he did he wanted to move fast, I practically had to yell a bleat to get him to stop at about 200 yds. The shot leveled him in his tracks, a nice 9-pt. |
RE: Indiana Hunters
Can see the pic of your deer. [:@] stupid red X's.

RE: Indiana Hunters
Well I havent been back out since opening weekend, which as most know, sucked due to the weather. But good news is that my dad killed a nice 9pt on friday the 21st with his .44 cal lever action rifle. Got him at 80 yds at 3:45 pm. Im getting back out there the first weekend in Dec, hopefully the weather is not as bad and I can still bow hunt. |
RE: Indiana Hunters
sunday evening someone had hounds and was coon hunting at night in the small woods i hunt, so went out to see if they had permission. I guess my neighbor who owns it gave them permission. I got to talking to them and one of them lives right down the road from me and he had been hunting around here for more than 20 years. He had already gotten a very nice buck earlier this season, it was probabaly boone and crockett(saw it on his cell). Even though my deer huntin in that area is messed up now, he said i can start coming with them and they're gonna pick me up for thanksgiving break to get some coons in there. He really wants to get me into coon huntin, and said he might even buy me a hound to get started:) so i'm kinda excited and angered, but there's plenty of other places to deer hunt

RE: Indiana Hunters
I went out Sunday morning. Had 4 does haulin it across the woods about 9 am. They came down off a ridge off the neighbors land and crossed over onto the property i hunt. They were spooked and i was pretty sure it was by one of the morons who shot 9 times to kill a year and half old buck about 6 days prior. When i got done hunting i drove around the backside to check and sure enough, they were there getting into there truck to leave. It's no wonder my deer sightings are so down this year when there is 4-5 people hunting an area about the size of maybe 30 acres.
This Wednesday i am going to back to Kosciusko county to hunt the 800 acres. Hoping that we will be hunting from stands this time around though. Plan on hunting from maybe noon or so until dark. |

RE: Indiana Hunters
I have seen several good to great bucks this year in southern, Indiana. While my overall numbers are down slightly from last year, the quality is up as far as the bucks go. I think that people blame the wind and weather for not seeing many deer. From what I have learned from DR. DEER they still have to move every 3-4 hours to fill their stomachs. When it is windy they seem to prefer low lying areas out of the wind. You can't killem from the couch!

RE: Indiana Hunters
The seven pointer I killed last sat. with my seven year old son came in to fight my decoy.

RE: Indiana Hunters
I went out today and had the best/worst day in the woods I have ever had. Since I didn't get off of work until 10:30 last night I just couldn't get out of bed really early this morning. I got into the woods around 7:30. On my way to my stand I jumped a grand total of 6 freaking deer. Every corner I went around there was a doe bedded down.[:@] I was trying to take the quitest route to my stand. I felt like just sitting down right where I was instead of making my way to my stand. When I get to my stand I had two more does jumpand circle around me.
I get up in my standand I had a strong cold westerly wind right in my face. My face hurts like heck right now. I don't see anything until 12:15 a spike walks to within 10 yards of me and scratches his ear with his hind foot and then he walks off. Then around 1:30 when I am in the middle of eating my lunch I notice a doe browsing through the woods behind me. I quickly put my lunch up and give her a few calls. She comes in and tried to figure out where the sound was coming from. She gets about 10 yards from my stand and I almost shot her but I thought I heard a deer behind her. There wasn't. Then about 5:30 two does trot through and off down the hill. Lots of deer but no big ones. I don't think I will be able to get out for anymore shotgun season. I guess I will just have to leave it for muzzleloader season. Sorry for the long post, but I had one heck of a day. |
RE: Indiana Hunters
congrats turkeystalker, been a long time since i seen you on here.

RE: Indiana Hunters
Trophy- I have been so busy and had alot of bad things going on at home with my fiance', Finally got all of it in order and got rid of her! You know I had litterally screwed myself over the past two years of deer hunting. I saw some really great deer and passed on quit a few good deer in hopes of a giant, which I actually missed during shotgun season! It was a blessing that my oldest son asked me if he could go hunting. Now mind you that he is seven and I didn't actually expect to see anything but does. But anything to get him intersted would be fine by all means. He was getting antsy around 4:30 so I told him to pick up the rattle bag and grunt while rattling. Sure enough 15 minutes after I heard a buck stomping through the woods. He actually started to walk away from us and I told London to pick up the bleat can and bleat at hime two times. That did the trick, he came back and saw our decoy and was really ticked off. Head down and ears pinned back, crab walking in. He was three yards from the decoy and about 25 from the blind in a swail in the field, Boom the Omega dropped him in his tracks! My boy said' " daddy did we smoke him?" I said' " we smoked him baby!" This will be one of the best memories hunting ever. We are going to go back out Thanksgiving, morning with his Papaw and see if he can bring his luck out again.
I can't wait to get him and his 2 year old brother out during turkey season! My youngest will not watch cartoons or tv of any sorts unless it is hunting shows! Thanks guys |
RE: Indiana Hunters
Turkeyhunter---I hunt in Switzerland Co inbetween Moorefield and Pleasant. We have land there that we've had for quite some time. It produced my dads 9 pt in the above post. Cant wait to get back down there the first weekend of December.

RE: Indiana Hunters
I went out this afternoon up along the Marshall/Kosciusko county line. Shot a nice big doe at about 4:45. There was a 6 pointer following behind her, not chasing, just making sure she wouldnt get away. I elected to take the doe rather then the small buck. I also had seen a spike earlier after 3 does.

RE: Indiana Hunters
I was out on Thanksgiving. Got into stand at 3:30 and at 3:45 heard a deer running through the leaves behind me. Turned around and it was a big doe. She was spooked. About a minute later, here came a 7 pointer. I don't think he was chasing, i think the idiots on the other property just bumped em off the ridge. There must be 4-5 people hunting the neighbors this year which is unusual and they are all idiots. Last Tuesday i'm sitting there and about 20 minutes before dark someone starts blowing on a grunt tube. He was using it about every 45 seconds and he continued it right up until dark[:@].
My last day out was Saturday. Saturday morning i had 9 does out in the field. Went back that night and wasn't even in my stand yet and the moron from the neighbors is freaking rattling horns lol. It sounds absolutely terrible, not to mention is quite a bit late to be rattling. He's mixing in some grunts too. Pretty soon i see him, and he's just walking around and sitting down every once in a while, he actually appeared to be drunk, but maybe he's just old, who knows. Then, his cell phone goes off. I'm not making this stuff up either. The idiot answers his phone and has a 10 minute conversation in the woods while he deer hunts. I come very close to getting down and leaving figuring he has ruined me and my brothers hunt. I decide to stay and as he worked his way through the woods he almost worked as a dog for us. He ended up kicking up a herd of 14 doe that ran right under my brother. He had to let em go since he didn't have a doe tag but thats as many deer as he's seen all year. So, at least it wasn't a complete bust. We will be back out for muzzy and hopefully the other boys have packed it in. |
RE: Indiana Hunters
Sounds a lot like the retards I used to hunt next to.
I remember all too well those mornings when the two truck loads of guys would rumble into the field a ½ hour after sunrise...then all talk and joke around. Eventually they'd get to their stands...only to get down after an hour...at which time they'd proceed to stalk the property for the deer they kicked out when they arrived. I can't remember how many deer my friends and I shot that they kicked to us. They thought we were deer Gods when we talked to them. Now we hunt another property...and a group of Amish and Eminem wanna-be teen's hunt where we used to. Bling Bling, dawg! Good luck with that bow from the 70's with no sights or arrow rest on it!!!:eek::eek::eek::eek: |
RE: Indiana Hunters
Trophy hunter--will do ;)

Feel lucky.
My favorite PM from what seems to be one of the Bow Hunting forum Gods asked "Why in the "eff" do you have your son straddeling the deer? Show some "effing" respect for the animal." What's even better is that theyrarely post a negative comment in the thread...just PM's and emails. |

RE: Indiana Hunters
Went out this afternoon after a morning of sighting in the muzzys. Did not have time to do it this week so we had to do it this morning. The weather was crap. I about wrecked my truck on the way out to shoot, slid on a piece of ice and fishtailed it into the other lane. Thankfully nobody was coming. We made it into the woods about 3 or so. We seen 9 doe. They were on their feet pretty much the whole time we were there. They were feeding on shrubs in a bottom area, not wanting to head into the winds and snow covered fields i guess. Unfortunately no bucks. I'm confident one will show up for the 2nd round of rutting though as long as nobody pushes the does out of there. I'll go a few times this week and then most of next week. I can't go all this next weekend, i got the in laws christmas in southern indiana to attend[:'(]

RE: Indiana Hunters
I hear ya about the roads, my sister wrecked her trailblazer today down by Bedford.

RE: Indiana Hunters
I went out with my brother in law this afternoon to set some traps and do some rabbit huntin. Got a couple rabbits. I was surprised we saw any though with as cold and windy as it was. One of them didn't jump until I was right up on it!

RE: Indiana Hunters
Well, my brother shot his first ever buck this evening. I was not there when he shot it, so he sat in my stand and shot it about 4:30. It's the same 8 point i passed up earlier in bow. No monster, but a nice little buck for him. I guess the other guy that hunts that woods scared the deer to him while he was walking to his stand. I drove out to help him gut it and noticed the deer still had extremely stained tarsal glands. He was with 2 does as well when my brother shot him.
