I know this is a midwest forum, but for those of you wanting to try for a public land monster, Maine is a sleeper state. There is a lot of open land, and some real monsters there. Maine doesn' t get the attention that the midwest does, so hunts are generally 1/3 the price of a guided hunt in Iowa or Ill. Or, you can just go camp and do it yourself. You may not see 30 deer per day, but the percentage of older bucks in the herd is higher in Maine than just about anywhere, and you likely won' t see too many other hunters up there either. It' s not an easy hunt, but if you have a week or ten days to put in around the 3rd week of November, you could bring home the biggest deer of your life.

iowa. has to be. we own 640 acres, and thers a bunch of public land right next to it. we push both properties, making sure to keep the bucks on our side. we shot 2 nice bucks on one drive through the public. there ya go

There are hundreds of beautiful bucks taken off the public lands in southern Ohio. Wayne National Forrest consists of tens of thousands of acres...it' s just a matter of patience.

I see HUGE bucks every year, taken from the Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois.

We Bowhunt Ill., Iowa & Wis. almost every year& 95% Public access. I have a 160 class Bucks being missed on video in Ws. last year 1 in Iowa & 1 in Ill.. Several others seen but out of Bow range.
Ws. is over the counter for tags-Ill. & Iowa have draw or quota.
Bowhunting North America Videos (web page) 1-563-243-7877 has a video/map informational package for under $30 about public access in all 3 states. Some places they cover are managed for TROPHY bucks.

Deerslayer_37 Just a comment, if you own 640 acres why are you pushing the public land and keeping " all the bucks on your side" Iguess that didnt sound right, to me it sounded like you want to hog ALL the deer. 640 is alot of land, ISEN' T that enough? Can others try to enjoy themselves while hunting on the public land without hunters Driving the deer and " hogging them" . NO offense, It probably just came out wrong, but thats what it sounds like. I' ve quite alot of big bucks on public land in Ohio the southeren to mid part of it mostly.

Ohio, Lots of public land south and east with shotgun\muzzleloader firearms season. Plenty of deer get to grow big. Scouting for turkey yesterday on public land and found several forearm to calf sized trees rubbed up. New spot!;)
