BowHuntinfool, Yeah, that is about as good of a spot as you'll find. I worked with the warden for a year there too, and we saw some real hogs cruising in the Mauthe Lake refuge. The big fields across from the Zilmer trails holds a ton of wildlife. My family calls that land "The Turkey Farm". Turkeys everywhere, deer everywhere, just a solid piece of land. I know that gets pounded pretty hard though. I'm a big fan of the Horserider's camp, right by the refuge too.
Warden....You talking about Doug???

I have killed a few deer and coyotes off the big field as we call it! Great area for early season. Like you said, Turkeys everywhere! I killed my Tom this year back in Zilmer, 24lb with a 12 inch beard, real big bird for the 1st season! I have a buddy that goes back by the HR camp, I never hunted it but scouted it with him a few times! The big ridge on the back side of the Big Field is a given spot to shoot a Doe. They cross the road coming out of the refuge and head to the field for some eats! Good spot if you only have a few hours in the morning to hunt, not a all day type of spot!

BowHuntingFool, I hunt the Kettle Moraine. I hunted next to the Mauthe Lake refuge several times this year also. There definately are nice bucks around that area and an unbelievable amount of does. My dad, friends and I have had a lot of good days in the field in the Kettles. It's nice to have a place like that close to home.
I hear ya, great place to hunt! There are some MONSTERS that live in the refuge there. Tons of Does. I hunt the kettles at least 3 times a week, mostly during the week when everyone else is working! I've met some great people that hunt up there! Maybe well all meet up this season!

Bowhuntingfool,

Yeah, Doug. He's a good guy. Another spot I found a couple years ago that has been pretty good for me is on top of the ridge just behind the New Fane church. THere are about 5 fields up there. Last year, I scouted that all summer and saw about 5-6 bucks every day in one of the soy bean fields. Some of them were pretty goodone's too. If you have a chance, go up there and take a look around up there. The fields to the north there seem to produce better areas than the ones to the south.

That is the area I call Cross Road, that little road that is a dead end by the fields your talking about is Cross road! I hunt that area a lot! I hunted that area hard during this past late season, the standing corn and beans were bringing them in, I stopped counting after 64 deer in the field at the same time, amazing!

I'm sure you recognize this, the marsh behind the corn/bean fields! Look at that deer trail coming right past my stand! This is the spot where the deer where EVERYWHERE!

Here is a shed of a Buck I missed, he dropped this the 3rd week of December!

Bowhunting fool,

I think that is a different area, just down the road from where your talking about. I don't have any pictures, but if you go into New Fane, and go east on DD, about a half mile down the road is a small parking lot on the north side of the road. I thinkthis is where most people park to go up to those fields. But if you park just to the north of the Church in New fane, and then walk up the snowmoble trail, it saves a lot of time to get to those.

Those pictures that you have are pretty awesome. I know where you're talking about there. Great area. I'm not sure I've ever seen as many deer in those fields as you say, but I know they're out there. How close is the river from where you sit.By your pictures there, it looks like the river is about 200 yards or so?

The picture you have of yourself w/ the shed is right next to the road right? Right where the road takes a 90 degree turn?

The pic was taken on S & Cross road. Cross road is between Youth Camp and GGG just before the church. Cross Rd is like 100 yards long or so with a gate and a turn around/parking at the end. Is this the same spot where your thinking! If you were to park at the end of Cross Road, in the turn around, and walk down the service road, field on right and a field on your left, keep walking. When you get to you can go Left, towards the River or walk another 10 yards and go to the right on the trail back towards the shelter. I don't turn I just keep going straight into the marshy/tall grassy field. The tree I sit in is about 25 yards from the trail! Great late season spot when know one is around. I am facing due north in this pic, refuge is off to the top right of the pic and the Church and Ridge I think your talking about is to the far right in the pic!

I talk to alot of guys there, what kind of vehicle do you drive, I'm in a 02 Silverado regular cab, pewter in color. Like I said I hunt there A Lot!

Yeah, I know exaclty where you're talking. I'm thinking of the other New Fane church. The one right in front of Youth camp Rd. If you go about 1000 feet to the north of that church, you can go into a small parking lot on the east side of the road. Park there and walk up the path until you get to the snowmobile trail. On top of that ridge are the fields that I'm talking about. I've seen some real nice deer up there. I know it gets quitea bit of pressure there too.

I don't live in the Kettle's anymore. I'm down in Madison now, but I try to get up there as much as I can. If I ever get back up there during the season, I'll try to track you down and share some secrets with you.

I know the lot your talking about. There always seems to be a car parked in the lot EVERY time I'm there hunting. I have only been back up there behind that church a few times last year! Thats a nice ridge, I'll probably give it a closer look this season and do some stomping around back up there! I called out a couple of Coyotes up there! Never got up there to deer hunt! If your ever going there shoot me a PM well shoot the ****!

Sounds good. I'm not sure how much I'll be getting back home, but I'll definantly let you know. How far away do you live from the Kettles?
