The ground is plenty wet enough around here, we just need the temps to go up so them little buggers will pop up out of the ground.

Lanse couche couche 04-09-2008 08:03 AM

RE: Morel Mushrooms

I am hoping that they are popping up good in about 10 days because that's when i will have a chance to do a three day weekend to go look for them in southeastern Illinois. I'm already fantasizing about deep fried morels and blue gill filets fresh from my dad's pond.

Found 20 yesterday. Sat down on a little hill to call at some turkey and they were all around me. Filled up my pockets and plan on returning in a couple days after 1st turkey season.

Damn, that is much earlier than i thought folks would be finding them in that part of Illinois. At that rate, 10 days from now may be too late.

Andrew,

What part of Ohio are you in.

A friend of mine who is a pretty good morel hunter went out yesterday in Richland county, Illinois and only found one.

We have a lot of standing water and pretty wet here in Wisconsin. Kinda cold at night still. Supposed to get some good storms for the next few days then warm up next week. I hope the skeeters aren't as bad as they were last year, I couldn't hang for a a while there!

I have found them before, but where do you guys like looking for them?

Lanse couche couche 04-16-2008 10:51 AM

RE: Morel Mushrooms

I usually find them around old dead elm trees, especially on the hills overlooking creek bottoms.

I just heard that they have started finding them up around Robinson, Illinois, which is 30 miles north of where he lives. So, it should be prime time in richland county by the time i get over there this weekend.

Wasn't a good weekend for me. I went out Satruday and found two. My father, son and I went out on MOnday and found 42. We combined those morels with some blue gill fillets and had a feast. Now, i'm gonna check out a few spots on the Great Miami river here in Ohio this weekend.

Headed out to KS and NE tomorrow for 5 days of spring gobbler hunting. If we found good numbers of morels in a certain area last year....... what are the chances of finding them in the same spot this spring?

They are in their prime now in SW IL. I've found nearly 1000 this past week. This coming week will be the end of it. It's been an incredible season.

I'm a novice with Morels. My wife and I decided to go looking yesterday for the 1st time, and found 19 in about an hour. 1 was different from the rest...it had the same shape was the color was a yellowish white. I'm kind of hesitant to eat it. Any recommendations?

Here's a picture of them.

If you're talking about the 2nd one in the bottom row, it's fine to eat. We call them blondes around here. They eat the same as the rest. The ones to stay away from are a reddish brown.
