Getting Bow Permission in South Dakota
 

How hard is to find a good place in SD to get permission to bowhunt? I've always dreamed of going to SD and killing a nice nuck with the bow. There's just something wild about SD that makes me want very badly to go there!:D

What kind of permission are you looking for? A guided hunt on private land or just a trespass fee on private land?

Trespass fee on private land. I've researched the SD DNR website and I know there is a lot of public land but, I figured the hunting would be better near agriculture. I've never been to SD and would love to see it.

I am going to SD at the end of September for a bow hunt. We are going through an outfitter that gave us a deal we really could not pass up.

Why don't you hunt in the Black Hills for free, after buying the tag obviously. Archery tags are not that hard to come by there. When I rifle hunted there they even had a tag that you could harvest a whitetail or a mule deer. It has been 6 years since I hunted there, so things can change, but it is one of my favorite places to go.

Black Hills area got some trophy bucks? Is that in the NW part of the state?

It is theNW part of the state. I have seen some very nice whitetail and mulies in the Hills and there are thousands of acres of public ground which you can camp virtually anywhere. also, a Black Hills tag allows you to hunt almost all of the black Hills without worrying about specific units. As with all states though private land ($$)typically holds more "trophy" animals. Most of SD, excluding the Hills, is very flatto rolling with very little cover.The great thing about the Black Hills is that you get a lot of the beauty ofthe Western mountains without the really high elevation. Also, hunting them seems to be a little easierdue to the numerous logging trails you can access.I enjoy it so much I often go out there (from IN) just to turkey hunt in the Spring.

Depends on what your looking for - mule deer or whitetail? Then depends on what type of hunting you are wanting to do? Spot and stalk, hunting from ground blinds, tree stands etc.

There are some decent deer in the blackhills but it wouldn't be my first choice to hunt.

I feel your Pain man I live in the Vermllion area and I'm pretty limited to where I can bow hunt.. oh well I'll make due, I might be able to help you find some land... your in the brookings area?
