Tick bite...

I was biten by a deer tick on the ankle about a week ago and noticed the trademark bullseye rash around the bite yesterday. I went to Quad med today to have it looked at and got a doctor who has NEVER delt with lyme disease But "no fear" he studied it on the internet for 5 minutes prior to my appointment. He said, "yea, dat dare looks a bit like da picture on da internet" "But what you doing here if you aint sick yet?" I told him from what I have read, and heard on lymes disease its critical to have early detection for prevention.
His response was, "Ok then, stop by and see me if you get any of the symtoms".
I said, I am already starting to feel some fevor and nausea... He scolded me saying "Lymes disease will make all your joints ache and you will be very sick.. IF THAT HAPPENS COME SEE ME!!!! He then gave me two pills to take that he said might clear the whole thing up... I bet they were placebos
Here is a pic of the bite location.

Here is some info I pulled off the web...

Lyme disease is diagnosed based on symptoms, physical findings (e.g., rash), and the possibility of exposure to infected ticks; laboratory testing is helpful in the later stages of disease. Most cases of Lyme disease can be treated successfully with a few weeks of antibiotics.
Sounds to me like the rash, and exposure should of told the doctor to imeadiatly put me on Anti-biotics!!!

Typical symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans. If left untreated, infection can spread to joints, the heart, and the nervous system.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has funded several studies on the treatment of Lyme disease. These studies have shown that most patients can be cured with a few weeks of antibiotics taken by mouth. Antibiotics commonly used for oral treatment include doxycycline, amoxicillin, or cefuroxime axetil. Patients with certain neurological or cardiac forms of illness may require intravenous treatment with drugs such as ceftriaxone or penicillin.

Patients treated with antibiotics in the early stages of the infection usually recover rapidly and completely. A few patients, particularly those diagnosed with later stages of disease, may have persistent or recurrent symptoms. These patients may benefit from a second 4-week course of therapy. Longer courses of antibiotic treatment have not been shown to be beneficial and have been linked to serious complications, including death.
Acording to the medical books I find online, Erythema migrans (the bullseye rash symtom of Lyme) should be sufficiant reason to administer anti-biotics...

Erythema migrans. Doxycycline (100 mg twice per day), amoxicillin (500 mg 3 times per day), or cefuroxime axetil (500 mg twice per day) for 14 days (range, 10–21 days for doxycycline and 14–21 days for amoxicillin or cefuroxime axetil) is recommended for the treatment of adult patients with early localized or early disseminated Lyme disease associated with erythema migrans, in the absence of specific neurologic manifestations (see Lyme meningitis, below) or advanced atrioventricular heart block (A-I). Each of these antimicrobial agents has been shown to be highly effective for the treatment of erythema migrans and associated symptoms in prospective studies. Doxycycline has the advantage of being effective for treatment of HGA (but not for babesiosis), which may occur simultaneously with early Lyme disease. Doxycycline is relatively contraindicated during pregnancy or lactation and in children <8 years of age. Antibiotics recommended for children are amoxicillin (50 mg/kg per day in 3 divided doses [maximum of 500 mg per dose]), cefuroxime axetil (30 mg/kg per day in 2 divided doses [maximum of 500 mg per dose]), or, if the patient is 8 years of age, doxycycline (4 mg/kg per day in 2 divided doses [maximum of 100 mg per dose]) (A-II).

Is there more than one doctor in Wisconsin? Then I would get a second opinion...Just a thought.

That, to me , looks just like a lyme's disease "rash". Check the pics on this website for yourself.

http://www.lyme.org/gallery/rashes.html

Then get to the emergency room. When there give them the name of this so-called "doctor" you visited.

Yep... Its a political nightmare The company I work for has there own hostpital and they seem to get all the Doctors that the "real" hostpitals turn down or kick out.... Sooo, in order to get my doctor viset paid for I have to go to Quad med, or where they send me, or simply pay for it myself.
Tomorrow I am going to talk to the head Doctor. If that don't work I will just go somewhere else.

A few of my friends have had it, I know 1st hand how dangerous it can be. I will do fine. I have fought raging bears, crimanals, rabid coons, and penis biting skunks... I think I can handle a little ol tick

I just need to take care of it right away, and I should be fine.

Dude, go see a doc with some experience with Lyme disease, that bite looks nasty.
I would rather have a skunk bite my Johnson than have that disease!!

Take this for what it's worth. I have a friend who's daughter got bit and contracted Lymes. She's in a wheel chair now. Don't mess with any ole doctor. I have have a brother in law that is a Dr. and I wouldn't let him treat me for a sinus infection. Find someone who has experience in Lymes and get treatment.

That doctor is a classic example of why malpractice insurance (and by extension medical bills) is sky high.

Agree with the above posts. Don't let it go. Early detection is the key. It is a simple antiabiotic for a couple of months. IF it progresses is gets very difficult and sometimes impossible to get rid of. I have seen people crippled and bed ridden because of this. So don't mess around. Get it taken care of NOW! Once your joints start hurting the bacteria has transformed into a "Cyst" and normal antibiotics are useless.

I contacted the head of Quad med and explained the situation. He forwarded my internet research to a Lymes specielist who called me and said I indeed have lymes disease and need to get on the antibiotic meds right away and sent the prescription and amount of the drug I requested to our pharmacy

Being a little proactive and watching out for ones own well being is the best medicine we have Let this be a lesson not to put all your faith into one or two Doctors. Do some research, ask some questions, take action man!!

Ouch man, hope it doesn't get too serious?

What's weird also, for some reason this year seems more ticky than I can remember. So far this year just from doing a lil fishing and scouting, between me and a bud, we have had over 20 ticks on us. Anyone else notice this?

Yes, ticks are absolutely horrible this year. Check yourselves every night before sleeping. Lyme's is usually the result of a tick being embedded for awhile. You don't get it from every bite and not if they are just crawling on you. It's from the one's not found for several days that have been feeding for awhile. It's , I believe, actually the baby ticks that spread it when they embed. They can be very difficult to see at 1st. (so small) Don't forgt your scalp. I found/felt a few crawling in my hair when turkey hunting. Ultra Thon by 3M is very good at keeping them away.

Been there, it sucks. You'll get some antibiotics and be ok. Just remember the antibiotics make your skin super prone to sunburn. At least mine did.

Absolutely! I was just in So. IL. and they're unreal. On arrival, I stepped out of the truck, walked 10 feet to unlock the gate. Got back in the truck, looked down and I had one on each foot!

Speedy recoveryto ya Bloodbro

In my stomping grounds I fully expect to see a lot of ticks on me, and come home w/ a few. I need a through check after every outing.

Your doc is incompetent. I see and treat LD almost year round here in Ark. It can be very mild or seriously debilitating. If there is any question of LD, it should be treated immediately and blood should be drawn for testing. In actuality, most cases of LD mean a headache and aching joints for a few days and we pass it off for a cold. But it doesn't always happen like that.

I'll take a fight with a bear or a peter-biting skunk over a serious case of LD anyday.

Seriously, I had the same experience earlier this year. Im inin the middle of Minnesota and was looking for sheds out at my land. Later that week my side started to hurt and I found a deer tick embeded in my side with a jet black circle around it. I called a clinic and was tranfered to urgent care. The nurse there told me "there were no deer ticks this time of year" and "what ever insect bit you it was nothing to worry about". I told her I had the tick and she still did not believe me. My mom had me go to her clinic and sure **** the doctor verified it was a deer tick and put me on medication.

My advise to you is to get a second opinion RIGHT AWAY.

Nobody burns anymore. I remember my grandpa burning off the fields every fall. Iffire spread through the timber as well, no big deal. I noticed on my place a couple of years ago that I couldn't walk 10 feet through my fields without being covered in ticks. I burnt off the fields that fall and every fall since for reasons other than ticks. But, nonetheless I noticed that the ticks aren't nearly as bad now.
