New to Kansas

I just moved from Indiana to KS. I am looking for some place to sight in my new rifle. I have only hunted deer with a shot gun. This is the buck I shot a couple of years ago.

Was wandering if anyone could pass some info a long that might help me out in KS. I live in Gardner, KS. I bought a ruger 77 .270 this was the gun that was reccomended for this area.It has a Leupold scope. I will be shooting winchester silver 130g balistic tip rounds. I can not wait to shoot a monster with a rifle it will be my first time.

Thanks in advance.

Hows it goin, I don't think there is to many places around here to shoot a rifle. Im from Olathe, not to far down the road from you. I do know that there is a rifle club around, but you will have to look it up im not sure of the name. Unless you know somebody with private land there isnt very many places to shoot. Look up powder creek shooting range, I have shot trap there but im not sure if they have a rifle range or not. Im goin deer huntin for the first time tomorrow, should be a good year. Good luck

Try out one of the walk in hunting areas. Looks as if Miami #2 has some good relief and in a full 160 acres, (1/4 section) It is just south of Osawtomi, not too far from you. Looks like it has some good relief.

There is a club where I have shot highpower matches in Desoto called Mill Creek. Don't know the policy on non-memebers but it would be worth a try.

I actually live in Gardner, KS as well. If you want to drive about 45 minutes there is a range in North KC you can go to that is a public range. It is called Parma Woods. It is a Missouri Conservation Dep. range. Also Mill Creek in Desoto as mentioned before is a private range, but if you call them they might entertain you with a trial day.

Welcome, from someone that went the other direction - KS to IN. At least one gun range in Wichita had an indoor 100yd rifle range. I would be suprised if none of them up in KC did as well. Also there were 100yd ranges at Lake Afton and Cheeny lake - you might check with the KDWP about the possibility of ranges at your local lakes - Hillsdale, CLinton, Pomona, etc.

We'd typically just ask around and find a farmer with rolling land (not a problem in your part of KS) for decent backstops, and just sight in at his field (though the fields might be a bit crowded the next two weekends with the pheasant and quail openers. I'm headed out to Dodge city to chase birds and mulies myself.

Before you drive out to Parma Woods call and see if you can shoot a rifle there, the last time I was there it was bow and shotgun only.

Sirex, I live just on the other side of the state line from you. Blue Springs MO has a manned 100 m rifle range open year round. they are opened from about 8:00 am until dark. During the week they may be one or two mornings you would not be able to get in. This is where all the area law enforcement do there firearms training. it cost about $3.00 an hour to shoot. They provide targets to you and they do require hearing and eye protection. They will also provide this to you to use if you do not have it. This is a really nice place to site in a rifle.

These guys are very proffesional and extreemly strict on safty. They have someone in the shack wathing and giving instructions on a loud speacker as well as 1 or 2 people walking behind the firing line. They will not fail to kick someone out for being the least bit unsafe. all weapons are to be completly unloded with actions open and magizens out for inspection while people are down range.

The place is named Lake City Shooting Range. It is just north of Blue Springs on 7 hwy.

Sirex - here are the driving directions to the Lake City Range. I just wanted to say this is where I site in all of my rifles. This place is awsome. Also if you are into shooting clays or if you want to get some pratice in for birds, they also have a nice trap range as well.
