I was wondering if it was legal to hunt the first season of the Illinios gun season with a muzzleloader? The rules are very unclear the way I read them.

Yes that's fine to use a muzzy first "firearms" season. It's not 1st and 2nd "shotgun" seasons anymore.

There is a true "muzzy" season though later in the year. Dec 8, 9 & 10.

first season u can hunt with a muzzleloader only if u have a regular firearms tag, then second season u can use both a firearm or a muzzloader tag and then yes there is a muzzleloader only season the weekend after the second gun season,
