attention ohio public land hunters
 

i was talking to an ohio dnr today at one of my many hunting locations and i was telling him i am putting up a game cam on public land he said wait i dont know if you can do that so i am waiting on a email to see if they will allow it.and while we were talking i got to talking abouting baiting with apples and corn and stuff salt licks,ect. and he said they dontallow that in public land. i looked in the book and no where does it say this. any one eles have a odnr officer tell them this?

First I am not sure if feeders or salt licks on public land is OK or not .
But on privit land I know it is legal .
IMO a gamecam is legal if not screwed to a tree .
But don't cry if stolen

The hand out booklet is highly abridged , the wardens copy is many 3 ring note books ( thousands of pages )

To find out for sure call 1-800-WILDLIFE (1-800-945-3543) and ask to talk to a inforcement officer about the question if legal or not .
Then ask for a hard copy of the law ( I think they will still send it to you for free )
Get their name and badge # to referance if you are confronted , and the warden says you are doing wrong .

I have been adding to a mineral lick for years on public land .
I just never hunt over it

i didnt put a feeder out justa salt lick and my cam is still there locked up to the tree until further notice heck on private land almost everything is legal

I don't think I would put a camera on any public land, in fact, I don't think I would put one on private land if it was anywhere close to any state ground.

I too was told by a DNR that you can't bait on public land. He said the main reason is that it gets back to hunters fighting over a spot. HunterA puts the bait down. hunterB finds deer in baited area and decides to hunt. Hunter A comes back and finds Hunter B in "his spot" and soon a fight gets going. He said you will not be sited for baiting, but littering since baiting is legal. Kinda like tree stand screw in steps are ok but not on public land. You don't get in trouble for the steps, but the fact that you damaged a tree on public land.

It's easy. You can't leave anything there legally, and you can't take anything out except what is allowed to be removed. You can't damage anything. If you want to leave a stand or camera it's at your own risk. You have no legal rites if they turn up missing. As far as the law is concerned the taker was just cleaning up litter left behind by somelaw breaker and they could findthe violatorand fine the person to boot.

Just voicing the way it is and mean nothing personally. Take your chances.

While we are discussing this, technically you can't clear a shooting lane on public land because you are damaging vegetation. However, that has never stopped me before. It just comes down to what you want to do and what you are willing to risk. I would be scared of losing my camera if I were you and having others hunting over my salt lick, but that is me.
