Shawnee National Forest
Hello,
I was wanting to know if anyone has hunted around Golconda, Illinois. We are suppose to be going down there this falldeer hunting (Archery) We are suppose to stay at Bay City Cabin. This is in the Shawnee National Forest, Pope County. Ifyou have hunted this area and would know a good location. Anyone have a topical map of that specific area? Anyone have any suggestion for hunting that area? I have never been there and would like to have a heads up! I know it's public land and probably to watch my gear. Just was courious if anyone had hunted that area and could give some good pointers before we head out this fall! Thanks a bunch!! Crutch |
RE: Shawnee National Forest
I just heard that all of the deer in that area were out sourced to Mexico. I guess you better cancell your trip to Illinois and go there...
All jokes aside Southern Illinois is one of the best Whitetail hunting areas in the country. Just remember to make lots of noise walking to your stand and scare them to Union county...... Good Luck!!! |
RE: Shawnee National Forest
Is it true that last year, over a dozen hunters from Dongola tried to check in some of those fake target deer at the check station?

ORIGINAL: brino........ All jokes aside Southern Illinois is one of the best Whitetail hunting areas in the country. Just remember to make lots of noise walking to your stand and scare them to Union county...... Good Luck!!! Yep, scare em allover to Unioncounty. Those Union boys are the worst shots. During shotgun season we hear lots of shooting over there. Then the deer all run over to their deathsby us in Johnson county. Thanks given in advance. UncleMatt snickers some more.........he he he he[:-]:D[:-]:D |
RE: Shawnee National Forest
There's some good deer down there. Never hunted there myself but know of few who do and manage their property. If you want topo maps, go to terraserver. Make sure you view the aerial photos AND the topo maps though. Sometimes the green areas (woods) on the topo maps don't match the woods shown on the aerial photos. And watch out for bigfoot down there....apparently there's been some sightings. hehe
