Illinois tags are probably gone, You usually have to get preference points for Iowa. Northern Ws. would be my best bet for you fellas. Over the counter & LOTS of excellent PUBLIC Land. I would try for the 1st week of Nov. & the Northern part of the state. Bowhunted it MANY times & always Public land.
Ohio IS much closer but I know nothing about that state & Northern Part of Mo. is excellent but I have not hunted it either (I have some close friends that do). Good Luck.

Try Shawnee national forest in southern Illinois. It's as big as any northwoods forest and the deer grow just as big. Plus it's all public land.

Illinois is still taking entries for their NR archery tag lottery till July 31

Last I heard, the general drawing applicant number was almost up to the 12,500 that will be awarded in the general drawing and about somewhere around half the quota of the 7500 reserved for hunters using oufitters had applications in.
