Lack of rain may cause a huge loss

If this drought keeps up as most "experts" expect, I am afraid we will experience a lot of deer dying from the midge fly disease(forgot what its really named). A few years ago several deer were found dead by farmers and hunters because of this disease which is caused by hot dry weather in late summer and early fall. Lets keep our fingers crossed for the farmer's crops and for the deer herds to not be affected.

I know things are bad up here, but I'm hearing they're even worse down in your neck of the woods. This is definitely not good.

I'm seeing some possible storms moving in over the next couple of days, so let's hope for the best. The corn fields up here and starting to look like giant pineapples the way the leaves are curling up.

I don't expect any rain up here in the nw section for a while. Looks like south and central is getting some from dennis, but I don't know how much, or if it will help. Hopefully we can get some good soaking rains, it's not good.

Up around here a lot of the crop farmers are getting ready to write the year off as a total loss. Corn is tasselling and without significant rain in the next week they crops will abort their ears. It could get real ugly, real fast this fall/winter.. I wonder how the mast trees will react to this drought. We are down like 15 inches for the year right now, and 7 or so since May 1st.

Well Coug, you must have had those fingers crossed pretty tight. It looks like the after effects of this latest hurricane have been our blessing. Raining now and supposed to keep the "soaker" on for a couple few days.

I hope it's enough (atleast for now) for our farmer friends.

Yep, we are getting good showers and its supposed to last through Thursday. Hopefully the forecasters will be wrong with their long range predictions though, this rain is soaking in and we need a good soaking at least once-twice a week for a while.

Well we have gotten a few sprinkles here, but not much. Not even enough to green the grass i dont think. Looks like spots by Pecatonica and up by Janesville have more, around half to 3/4 of an inch.

Don't worry about the corn too much, they like to keep their feet dry anyway. Today's corn is pretty drought tolerant.

Dennis is giving the mid-west a good bit of rain. I guess he wasn't a menace after all.

We got a quarter of an inch here. Barely settled the dust.. Seems like the rain was mostly to the east or South of here from Dennis... I need about 2 weeks in a row of .25 inches a day to even come close to normal for summer. In reality all of the cool season plants are done for they year anyways as it was so hot and dry for so long they went dormant.. The farmers with irrigation don't have much faith in the forcasts for more rain, irrigators are running all over the place today.

Corn may like dry feet but when the leavess are curling by 8:30 am and don't uncurl until after nightfall the heat/drought is really putting a beating on the plants.

I think we should all just keep saying our proper prayers and keeping our fingers crossed. I was thinking about all the food plots we planted could crap out and other things that related to potential harvests of nice deer. But ya know, we'll get some deer. maybe not as many or maybe not as grand as we dream, but we'll get some deer off the property again, we always do.

But I want the rain to keep the real crops going. The farmers need it morethan we do. Drought can really take a toll on the economics.

Remember the farmer come harvest time.
