Default HBC Under the Lights (Indiana) August 20, 2011

Saturday, August 20, 2011
The HBC night shoot will be held at River Junction just south of Americus, IN. This is a put in/take out shoot- no trailering. This will be a 2/3 person numbers shoot ($60 entry fee whether 2 or 3 shooters) with big fish awards in the following categories: Silver Carp, Bighead Carp, Grass Carp, Common Carp, Buffalo (big and smallmouth), Gar (short and longnose), Bowfin, and Average Joe. This year ALL legal fish will count towards team‘s totals (suckers weren‘t allowed in the past), so we are expecting harvest numbers to be extremely high. I will be paying out 1-3 placings if there are under 25 teams and 1-5 if there are more than 25 (subject to change pending participant opinions). All shooters need to be registered by 6 P.M. so we can have prize give aways and raffles. The rules meeting will be at 6:30. The shoot will be from 7 P.M. Saturday to 6 A.M. on Sunday. Every shooter will receive a free door prize donated by our sponsors: Muzzy Products, Bowfishing Extreme, AMS Bowfishing, Cajun Archery, and several others. If you need more info. email me at [email protected].

The 2011 HBC Under the Lights was held on Saturday, August 20th near Americus, IN. The waters of the Wabash and Tippecanoe Rivers was seasonably low and then some… the day started with sun, but storms moved in. Eighteen teams blasted off at the 7 o’clock start to make it up or down the rivers. Shooting was good as it got dark, but about 10 the rain and thunderstorms came in. I know many teams (including ours) parked the boat and sought shelter from the lightning. After a 30 min wait, we got back on it. Water was low, but murky, but there were fish to be shot. The low water caused many teams to have to push their boats, which made for a long night. We had to push our fan boat out at least 40 times. By 6 A.M. we’d already had two teams retire, so the other 16 got in line for check in. Having a huge trailer from a local farmer, check in went quickly and smoothly. Final total was 580 fish from 16 teams that checked in. Taking our full 18 teams, that’s a 32.2 fish per team average, which is a new HBC UTL record. The top team was the team of Ben Stier and Shane Weaver with 85 fish (a new HBC UTL record). Second place went to Gary Brooks, Kent Zimpfer, and Shayne Loveland with 77 fish, and third went to Dustin Houston, Tim Escott, and Cameron Coble (Team AMS). We only paid top three, but rounding out the top five were Jarett and Bryer Houston with 60 fish and Brandon Aldridge, Joe Urbanski, and Chad Woodruff with 33 fish. Big Common Carp was shot by Team Troyer with their 14.3 lb. fish, Big Grass Carp was 22.13 lbs. and was shot by Joe Urbanski, Big Dogfish weighing in at 4.5 lbs was shot by Team Troyer, Big Bigmouth Buffalo was a 12.5 lb. fish shot by Brandon Aldrich, Big Smallmouth was a 18.9 lb. fish shot by Shane Weaver, Big Shortnose Gar was 3.0 lb. fish shot by Brett Zartman, Big Longnose Gar was a 5.6 lb. fish shot by Cameron Coble, Big Quillback was a 2.15 lb. fish shot by Team AMS and Team Redwater Bowfishing (tie), Big Silver was a 10.3 lb. fish shot by Team AMS, and Average Joe went to Team Aldridge for their 33 fish. No Bighead was shot for the first time in tournament history. Considering the extremely low water and the thunder storms, we were able to break several HBC UTL records: Team total, tourney total, Big Grass Carp (22.13 lbs.), and start records for divided categories in buffalo (bigmouth/smallmouth) and gar (shortnose/longnose). The HBC tournaments continue to grow here in north central Indiana, and if you are looking for a place to shoot a diversity of fish, we have 14 legal species, so come experience the HBC the third week of June and the HBC UTL the third week of August and join us for some “Blood, Guts, and Carp Eggs!” Visit our page on facebook at Houston Bowfishing Classic or email at [email protected].
