Question from a newby bowfisher
 

Hello all, I'm an experienced bowhunter but have not yet bowfished. I just bought a new bow, retreiver, arrows, etc and am all set up. I would like to practice in my basement with my bowfishing arrows. I have ams arrows with muzzy carp points and safety slides installed. I could not find where Muzzy makes a practice point, do you all just cut or bend the barbs off to practice into a target.

I don't shoot my fish arrows in foam much. The best practice is to go out and shoot in the water. Seeing as how it's a bit on the chilly side right now, the water shooting is a bit tough. ;)

When I do shoot foam with a muzzy quick release tip, I loosen the tip, turn the barbs backwards, and tighten the tip back up(so it's like a trident) and shoot it that way. It will tear up a foam target but it also pulls out fairly easy.

I have a practice arrow. It was an old one where the barb was boned up...I cut the barbs off took the safety slide off and there I had a practice arrow to use when I change up my rest or what not....

I have some old corregated black pipe, like you bury in your yard to run rainwater away from the gutter downspout. I cut it into pieces about the size of a decent silver carp, and toss the pieces off the deck, and shoot from on the deck. Works great. Reel them in, pull them off, and throw them back out again. Comes off easy, and you can put a lot of holes in one before it gets too shot up to be useful. Good for teaching kids before you take them out in the boat. Tougher to keep their attention on the various safety aspects when you are on the water, and you can get the motions established before excitement and fish enter the picture. And being able to reel in the "catch" provides a success aspect that is nice.

I have done the same. I cut the barbs off a cajun piranah and just used a dull tip. i shoot off the deck of the boat but always at small things, bottle caps, dandelions.... make ya focus more and ya dont usualy have to pull them off. It will realy tear up a foam target without taking the barbs off

You've already got lots of good advice already. The best practice is shooting fish, but I understand wanting to get you rig tuned before you go out.
