RE: We got us ANOTHER boat
Got the gunnels done!
![]() I've got 2-4" screws and 2-3" screws in each corner. They're pretty strong. ![]() And I've got all new wood in the bow. ![]() I put three coats of spar-varnish on everything and I plan on putting at least one more coat. Now I have to figure out how I want to build my deck. I still have to put a piece of oak on the top of the gunnels andI still have to trim off all those bolts, but that's just details. The hard part is over (I think...). |
RE: We got us ANOTHER boat
Looking awesome!
But does it float? ;):D I'm kinda surprized you didn't use carriage bolts down the side. Were they more expensive? |
RE: We got us ANOTHER boat
It's really looking good Steve.

RE: We got us ANOTHER boat
Thanks Christine.
No Kendall, I just wanted to crank on them to get them really tight and I couldn't get carriage bolts tight enough without them turning. The ones that are on it I bought by accident and I ran out of the hex-bolts. |
RE: We got us ANOTHER boat
Steve,
Do you realize you discovered a new element? Aluma-oak! Chemical symbol 'Ao' will now be added to the periodic table. Judd |
RE: We got us ANOTHER boat
Wow! What an inspiration. My dad has a 11' (I think) john boat. I've been thinking about trying this whole bow fishing thing out. His boat is in a little better shape though.;)Can't wait to see the finished product.

RE: We got us ANOTHER boat
Hey Ducsauce. Welcome the this side of the site. This is where I spend my summers. ;)
You've got to givebowfishing a try. It's the most fun you'll ever have with a bow in the off-season. I was having a problem putting my cap on the gunnels, and I figured out that I had set them wrong. I had to plane them down so they were more level. That's alot of planing, let me tell you. ![]() ![]() Now everything's ready for my cap and then lights and finishing touches. I have 100' of 1"-square tubing coming for my deck-frame. I wanted to do the whole thing in wood, but I'm worried about longevity, and I didn't want a wood-frame failing on me in the middle of the night, on the middle of a lake somewhere. I agreed to make a friend of mine some legs for his kitchen-table and he got me the tubing. Now I have to help Mark finish his boat so he'll help me weld up my new deck-frame. It's gonna be just like his old one/Chris' new one. I'm almost at the home-stretch now. Just keeping you posted... |
RE: We got us ANOTHER boat
P.S.
After Kendall's comment about the bolts, I replaced them all with carriage-bolts. And I routed a round-over on the bottom of the gunnels all the way around. |
RE: We got us ANOTHER boat
cool.
