We got us a boat!

Just picked it up this afternoon. I didn't realize Menards had great deals on boats. Spring clearance or somethin. Some assembly required however. ;)

6 Days and counting!

Nails? We don't need no stinking NAILS!!

BTW, I'm leaving right now to pick up our "plan-B" boat. So technically, we have twoboats. Hopefully, one of them will be ready by saturday-morning.

You guy's will want to keep an eye on this.

RE: We got us a boat!

4 Hours later and I've got the bulk heads all glued up and the front end section formed. I think I can have it all built by tomorrow. The only X factor is glass and resin showing up in time!

I am serious by the way! :D

Dang. You go Mark.

I should have saved our tree for you. You could have made a yacht or something. :)

This is fascinating.

OK question time.
How did you decide what radius to make the front?
How will you bend the sheeting around it?

Inquiring minds want to know. Oh and me too! [:-]

Mark, that is so cool, just one question:
How many Vikings is it going to take to turn that thing over and get it in water. I do hope you can get it down to Rend

HNI_Christine 04-14-2008 11:26 AM

RE: We got us a boat!

Are you going to put a keel on it?

Mark S 04-14-2008 11:41 AM

RE: We got us a boat!

The front was a total guess on my part. I wanted enough radius to allow the boat to get on plane and not plow water, but not too much radius because you lose your flotation with people standing on the front. And I had to think about the troller on the front and moving water against the boat when going forward. I ran the sheeting perpendicular to the boat so it bent easily. And I didn't want to have a seem running down the middle of the boat where I'd have to put in screw backers. Every seam falls on a bulkhead. It's getting pretty big, but I can still lift it by myself. I keep checking! I'm trying to keep close watch on the weight going into this thing. I'm pretty sure the basic hull will weigh around 700lbs when glassed. So I've done the math and if this thing weighs 1500lbs rigged, it will displace almost 40,000 cubic inches, which is about 2.7" of "level" draft with about 16' of boat in the water. Every 1000lbs after that will push the boat 1.8" deeper. Of course this is all in a perfect environment and bowfishing boats are never in a perfect environment! I'm really hoping to make Rend but I'm still waiting for resin and cloth to show up. If I don't see it by Wednesday I'm in trouble!

I'll run it smooth bottom first, then if I have to I might add some keel strips later.

WAY COOL!
You have been busy!

Hope you get the materials in time.
... so I can beat you. ;)

how tall are the sides?

Ahh, the million dollar question and probably the most controversial issue. I've got several good reasons why too. But I'll keep them to myself until I get the boat wet.

17" :D

RE: We got us a boat!

Bad news, my materials are scheduled to show up Friday. Much too late to glass a whole boat for Saturday! My boat is out for Rend. That just gives me more time to have it ready for Shelbyville!

Better go over to Steve's and work on his boat. [:o]

RE: We got us a boat!

I've been working on it off and on all week. I'm filling all the joints, gaps, and holes so I can glass the bottom. My cloth showed up, but no resin yet.

Did you nail yourself to it?

This will be so interesting to see on the water. :)

My wife figured out how much money and time I've been spending on it. You can't see her, but she's holding a gun. I'm shouting back, "don't shoot the boat"!

If she misses the boat and hits you, can I have your new bow?

That's funny! I tried to come up with a funny caption, but I know I can't top that. ...at least not before coffee.

RE: We got us a boat!

The boat was progressing pretty good and then all work stopped suddenly. I've been putting some long hours in the field! The bottom is all glassedand one of the sides is glassed. Steve came over for a day helping lay out some things and built the center console. I'm not sure when it will get finished now.
