Well, the higher the better, sort of. This is a good question, It would be interesting to see how high different folk have thier lights.

I have mine mounted straight on the deck which is level with the side rails.....I have never had a problem with seeing fish.......shooting them, maybe, but not seeing them :D

That seems to be what you will find. My brother mounted his lights very much like the Hamburgler, AKA Deer Predator has. And he's shot tons of fish (literally) from this type of set-up. I like the way my lights were set-up then I moved one light back farther and had to put it about 7" higher. That little change in height made a big difference in how well we could see into the water.

By all means I agree with carpsniper "the higher the better". The reason why I did not go with a raised deck and all is because my family goes out with me traditional shooting....My lights can actually be completely removed by 8 screws and 10 min.....
