Muzzy Classic
Well, after having some outboard issues at Rend Lake we had to take the mighty CIRFCU to a boat place (Klauser Marine) in Shelbyville for repairs. Kendall did a 200 mile round-trip jaunt to drop it off. Yesterday we packed up and went to pick it up. We didn't leave the shop until 6pm. [:o]
Anyhow... we are now somewhere in TN. Murphysboro I think. Can't be too far to the Muzzy starting point (Scottsboro, AL). Did I mention we blew a tire on the boat trailer? [:-] We almost stopped at the KY dam to shoot bigheads but we figured we'd stay there all night and we probably should get our 'beauty' rest. Haven't seen any other bowfishing rigs yet. The Illinois Bowfishers should be having three teams down at the Muzzy Classic. :D (Indy Boys/Slim, Team Waynesville and the CIRFCU) Okay, time to guzzle coffee and hit the road again. More updates later. C |
RE: Muzzy Classic

Shoot some fish for us!
|
RE: Muzzy Classic
How 'bout these....
![]() Of course they are too big to fit in the picture. One was 73# We've gotten to see all kinds of rigs and set-ups. More later... |
RE: Muzzy Classic
holy crap i wish they got that big around here!!!!!!
|
RE: Muzzy Classic
Holy moly.....nice fish
|
RE: Muzzy Classic
Yikes!
Might have to turn on the outboard to fight some of those. |
RE: Muzzy Classic
Those fish are so big I might be able to hit one!

RE: Muzzy Classic
Well we're back... finally.
We didn't get any big fish at Guntersville but we were able to weigh-in 20 fish! But you know that when you bring gar to a weigh-in you're not going to be taking home the big prize. :DNot that we were planning on it anyway. It was a lot of fun seeing all the teams and their boats. If you've never seen a bunch of airboats take off at once, you need to go to this shoot or the worlds in July. It can only be compared to standing behind a jet engine in a rain storm. :D Hopefully we can the rest of the pictures up soon. Until then it was good to finally meet some more of the BFUSA folks for the first time and get re-aquainted with many more. We did stop at the Tennessee river on the way back. Christine was itching to shoot a fish bigger than her 21# MO carp. We were able to do that with a 33# 5oz bighead. I was able to find a 36# 15oz fish as well.(that means I get to retain my "champion of the world" status )We saw some that would have gone even bigger but they always showed up when we were busy with other fish. We were also able to get some force feeding shots. We even saw a dogfish which I didn't get to the boat. [:@]I did kinda ruin his day though.More later... |

Muzzy boats...
kicker motor boat (there were several of these) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Pontoon boat contingent. Mr Dan's sweet rig. ![]() Mr Dan checks out the CIRFCU. It looks like it has a fan in this picture. That's Kain's big airboat behind it. ![]() |
RE: Muzzy Classic
Of course there were a zillion more boats. 81 teams were at the Muzzy. [:o]
We got first place in the Pontoon Boat division. Mr Dan came in second. (that is all you need to know.) ;) Actually, we came in 50th place (dang, I thought it 36th place), which given the rigs and shooters that we were up against, isn't too bad. I believe Team 'Catastrophe' came in 18th place (Luke, Joseph and Alex). Chris Followell's team shot at least one fish but they didn't weigh in. The fish were tough to find. The top teams got great fish, but there were a lot of teams turning in spotted gar to get their 20 and lots of teams that didn't have 20 to weigh in. Mike Bommer got an 84lb grassy and other great grassies and still came in 5th. [:-] Mike's grass carp. (that's him laughing) ![]() |
RE: Muzzy Classic
Joseph and Joe Nichols shooting the breeze.
![]() Bommer put on a great shrimp boil at the Muzzy Meet and Greet on Friday. Mr Dan fried up some tasty catfish too. The shrimp that Yedor brought up. ![]() Mmmm... ![]() (there's 15lbs of shrimp in that bucket, just one bucket of a whole bunch that got boiled up) Alex was Mr PR-guy at the meet and great. :) ![]() Bryan Hughes (WarEagle) and Gar-Maam at the Backwater Bowfishing booth. ![]() Mr Dan's Passing onthe Traditionbooth. ![]() |
RE: Muzzy Classic
Part of the CIRFCU strategy was to get into places the taller or deeper drafting boats couldn't go.
Here's a low bridge.. ![]() We can just squeak through. ![]() Obviously, that wasn't a winning strategy. Not only could a bunch of the smaller boats get into the same waters... but there were hardlyany fish back in those areas. [&o] The trick was to cover a lot of water...and to know the lake. I think some boats used up over 40 gallons of gas in that 12 hours. Speed's speedy airboat. ![]() (One gallon.... two gallons.... three.) :) I heard that some of the guys actually could chase down those skittish grass carp and buffalo. Look at the size of those fish! ![]() ![]() |
RE: Muzzy Classic
![]() Mark Land concentrates... ![]() Even with all the teams weighing in, things went smoothly. Kudos to Mark and all the Muzzy helpers! Part of the prize table. Lots of goodies. ![]() (Muzzy donated a bunch of stuff for door prizes for our State Shoot at Shelbyville too!) |
RE: Muzzy Classic
I wish I coulda made that one. That's alot of boats! Hope you guys had a good time.

RE: Muzzy Classic
I have a couple more pictures (the winners).
We did have a good time. It was fun to talk with the folks from BowfishUSA who I haven't met before. The only bummer was that somewhere in KY we became lighter by one generator and one full tool box. I think it was at the boat ramp. We were sooo tired we couldn't tell up from down. I stared at the bed of the truck for a while trying to figure out why there was more room than I remembered. Then it dawned on me that the little genny was missing. Same with Kendall's tool box. I guess we donated it to some local meth addicts or something. Oh well. If you're going to bowfish tired, lock up your stuff while you're still coherent. That's the lesson. Ugh. Nowwe have to scrape up the money to pay for anothergenny and tools.[:@] (need tools more than the genny) The bowfishing below the dam was great though. You could see bigheads six feet down. I really wanted to beat that 21lb mark. (My biggest fish were a 21lb bighead and a 21lb common carp) I got a 33lb 5oz bighead. Yippee! This is me trying to hold it up. I'm such a wuss. ![]() |
RE: Muzzy Classic
Okay, the rest of the pictures.
Mr Dan presents Mark Land with a sponsorship appreciation plaque. ![]() Sixth place $250.00 ![]() Fifth $500.00 ![]() Fourth $750.00 ![]() Third $1000.00 ![]() Second $1500.00 ![]() First. $2500.00 ![]() Longest gar won a new Pearsonbow. Gar was 57.5" ![]() Heaviest carp won a Mathews bow. 39lb common carp ![]() Heaviest Buffalo won an AMS fishhawk bow. ![]() Heaviest Grass carp won a Bowtech Genesis bow. 80.5lbs (actually 84lbs on a certified scale... a new world record) ![]() |
RE: Muzzy Classic
That must really be something to see, all those boats and huge fish.
Wish I could have met up with the BFUSA crowd. That sucks about the stolen stuff. [:@][:@] Maybe you should file a police report. After all, that kind of thing never ever happens. ;) Probably just some locals feeding their habit though, like you said. |
RE: Muzzy Classic
Seeing those huge grassies was cool. But not nearly as cool as it would have been to get a shot at one. ;)
I have never seen so many BIG fish as we did at KY dam. If you have a chance get down there. (and lock your stuff up) You can literally shoot 'til your arm is sore. My goal this weekend is to see how many we can get in the boat. 1000? 2000? Probably not. ![]() Especially when they're this size! 16 fish filled our two barrels. My solution?..... bring more barrels!!! heh heh heh |
RE: Muzzy Classic
HOLY COW!!! That thing is huge! I can't wait to hunt those!
|
RE: Muzzy Classic
Wow! Great fish and some incredible boats. I think I've got less in my truck than some of those guys have in their bowfishing rigs.
No one with a canoe, huh? Cowards! :D |
RE: Muzzy Classic
Now you all se why im obsessed with ky dam i would rather shoot bigheads than anything else......;)

K & C:
Thanks for the pictures and nice job on representing the Illinois Bowfishers!!!! ![]() Sorry to hear about your generator and toolbox. That sucks!!!!!! ![]() Mikey ![]() |
RE: Muzzy Classic
nice pics, thanks for sharing them. i got a question...after you shoot a bunch of fish(or not very many fish jusa few huge ones)and fill up the barrels, can you cruise back and drop your fish off, then go back out? or is it once your full....your full and thats it?
|
RE: Muzzy Classic
Shootstuff4570: can you cruise back and drop your fish off, then go back out? One of the strengths of the bigger boats is that they can handle more weight before having to drop off. Less trips to the dock mean more time fishing.Dropping off earlier can pay off too since it will bring your boat back to a shallower draft and giveyour poor motor a break. |
RE: Muzzy Classic
'70, Bulzeye pretty well covered it. I don't knowof a numbers tourney that wouldn't allow you to drop off fish. It's more of a liability issue I think.
The Muzzy is a modified big twenty. So even though they're whacking some huge fish, most boats would handle the weight. On the other hand the UBK carp-o-ree is a biggest carp, gar and overall (a big one). But if you keep seeing bigger fish all night, pretty soon you've got a boat full. |
