Cheapo Canoe stabilizers.
Requested I post some pics of my stabilizers. They make bowfishing and fly casting much easier.:D (even with a lab on board)
All built with 3/4 inch PVC and 2 swim noodles. If I was gonna redo it I'd put some T's in the noodles and integrate them into the frame. For now they are just zip tied on. I folded the noodles in half, and slid a section of PVC into each half to add rigidity to the noodle. I believe I put 8" of drop on it. I attach it to my canoe with the same straps I tie it down on my truck, so no chance of forgetting them. Notice the cross bars; they way the straps are on, it can't slide side to side. I also think it's about 18" wide. HEY! I needed easy acess to my cooler!!!;) I think you can buy all the parts for under $20. USE GOOD PVC CEMENT!!! |

Very nice solution.
Easy to use and cheap. Great for guys just getting into the sport, and great for very shallow water. Thanks Chris |
RE: Cheapo Canoe stabilizers.
Do you think you could turn it over if you tried to roll it? Just curious how stable it is. Nice work!

RE: Cheapo Canoe stabilizers.
If you stood on the side something would give, Most of the gain I suppose is in the stability they give, the "roll" is gone and it easy to keep your balance. You can lean pretty far over and feel pretty good.

What's the wingspan on that thing? About 5 feet or so?
I've got some expendible noodles, and the wifey wants to buy me a canoe. :) |
