Got the Carp Rig Out Tonight
 

I was on my way home from work when a good buddy of mine called on my cell phone. After a brief hello he said he had a problem and needed my help.

One of the places we hunt is loaded with coyotes, so he decided to go hang out for a while this afternoon with his .22-250. At about 4:30 he called in a big song dog and dispatched him...right in the middle of the frozen pond. My friendtook two steps out on the ice and went through.

After getting back on the bank he realized he had a minor problem: one very dead coyote and no way to get him off the thin ice. That's where I came in. "Go to the truck and get warm. I'll be there in an hour".

After stopping home to gather some gear and kiss my wife, I headed to the property. With one of my musky rods and a great big bucktail spinner we talked strategy. "You hold the flashlight and I'll snag him".

My friend neglected to tell me he had no flashlight. Great...we were going fishing for coyotes in the dark. First cast I thumped the lure on him. With a quick tug I set the hook, but the 20# mono wouldn't budge the critter. So after snapping my line,I went back to my truckfor Plan B.

This is probably as redneck as it gets, but I figured if I could get a bowfishing arrow in him I could get the dead coyote off the ice.One shot...thump..."'Yote on!!!" A steady hand over hand pull brought him to bag. Not a bad coyote--37# with a thick, lush winter coat. He'll make a nice mount for sure.

Dang Jason, you move just a little out into the boonies and you're getting all redneck on us.

Next you'll be shooting starlings from the kitchen window and squirrels from the porch. (not that I would do any such thing) :eek:;)

What a cool story! Nice 'yote too! He's(?) got a beautiful coat.


I can't wait to not do that again. That was the most fun I ever had trying to fix a door. :)

Bucktails may be fine, but you'd better line up a little better than I did. Or you could always try to shoot coyotes that aren't rude enough to run out on a frozen pond before crashing out.

Oh, and the 'yote was a "he". It's going to be full mounted. I can't wait to see what it looks like when it's done.

I hate to ask, but is the mount going to include the bucktail or the fishing arrow? It's gotta have one or theother. :DThat story is just too funny to keep from making it part of the mount.

I want a bigcoyote for a full mount over my bar. Tell your buddy congrats on the trophy.

Hey, where did he hit him at? From the picture, I'd guess the throat, but it's hard to tell. Just curious. The hunter in me had to ask. ;)

Good idea. When it's done I'll have to give him a bowfishing arrow to go with it. He'll probably hit me with it though. ;)

Steve,the black spot you see on the throat is the fur. He took him in the chest on the right side. The bullet came apart on impact (which I'm told is what a varmint round should do to avoid ricochets). You should see the entrance wound. The taxidermist's got his work cut out for him.
