Its been awhile since i updated this thread, I backed off from the Turkeys for the past couple of years to allow for the Toms to get some age, I counted over 250 birds this past winter on one property, and another 200 birds on another, I counted 22 Strutters in a bachelor group of Toms near the 200. It should be a very good year for mature Toms.

2014 Rios, as they lay This was a doublel kill with a friend, we both fired at the count of 3, he is shooting a 12ga with the new Winchester Long Beard XR shells my new H&R 10ga turkey gun, i adorned it with a Truglo "Gobble Stopper" sight, Kicks .690 "Gobblin Thunder" choke and a set of Harris bipods. The Toms were standing still at 52yards.Both dropped in there tracks about 2 feet apart. |
Scott and Tim returned for a succesful hunt |
Scott filled his second tag the next day. |
A husband and wife arrived yest. afternoon from Michigan. We went for a drive in the evening, spotted some birds and made a plan for this morning. We walked in about 200y, I set the Avian feeder, breeder, and jake decoys about 15 yards out. We listened to about 20 Toms and Jakes gobble in the predawn darkness, to the NW, N, NE, E, SE, and South of our position. Three Toms flew down into our field along with a lone hen, then 5 hens and 9 Jakes joined them in the field. Two Jakes came to strut and dance with the dekes for a few minutes, then the lone hen started to move across, parallel to us and the 3 Toms started our way, with a small quiet call, they were running to us. Both birds were down just before sunrise! Linda killed her first turkey ever and Tony took another, the 3rd Tom was missing several fan feathers so they let him go. Its been a very succesful season! |
Zmax - sent you a pm.

Spent a good part of Saturday in Topeka for the Kansas Monster Buck Classic. Came across an interesting new product for hunting turkeys. I bought one to try out this spring.

Turkey fan
Brian, would really like to know if that idea works. Might come in handy in those large alfalfa feeds.
|
Have had a great start to the season. I helped my nephew and his 8yo son get his 1st turkey, called in a nice pair of Toms.
Then I had 4 hunters here from the east coast. Two of them killed 2 Toms each and the other two each killed 1. They had a very good chance to also tag out but a heavy thunderstorm with lightning, quarter to half dollar hail, and driving rain in the 60mph winds rolled in forcing the hunters to seek shelter,..with Toms slowly moving their way! We have seen a lot of Toms and dozens of Jakes as well. |
I will have to get some photos posted, just finished a hunt with 2 young men from Iowa. One of them killed a nice Tom on Thurs. and another Friday morning. His partner had a couple close calls but couldnt get the birds into the open for a shot.
Until this morning! We had a big Tom on one farm cruise past us at 70y and avoid our dekes. We switched properties, spotted birds about 600y out. The 3 of us were able to slip in on the birds to about 80y, they were henned up tight,..so we didnt even try to call. The hunter belly crawled to a fenceline and lay waiting,..after several tense moments with a hen about 10' away,..the Toms made their way towards him and hit his shooting lane. He fired killing one, stood up and killed the other! It was so awesome to watch it all unfold! |
Turkey season will be here before long, i have several spots available. Updates have been made to the 1st post to reflect state pricing changes, links, and other info.

Very nice. You have a website?
|
Don't think he has one RPD63 but I will vouch for him. Has a ton of birds, is a great guide but better that that he is a better person.
|
|
This Tom was with 3 hens, once he saw the decoy fan, he slowly started to strut our way. From about 50y out, he started running to us, gobbling on the run.
This 2nd video was a bow kill. Using a Knight & Hale Pretty Boy with Pretty Girl decoy and an original Doublebull Recurve Matrix 360 blind. Post 32 has a photo of the set up. |
Helped a 9yo youth get his 1st Tom
Next up was a family from Tx. I took their 12yo son with me, killed his 1st Tom in the morning and another that afternoon. His dad was filming his mom, using a Mathews Jewel...oops, they forgot her release..by the time they returned for the morning hunt, birds were visible and they had to run them off to get in the blind..they came home for an early lunch and went back out. She killed her 1st animal with a bow that afternoon. So we killed 3 on friday..they left that evening as a bad winter storm was approaching. 2018 Summary 100% filled 1 tag 77% filled their 2nd tag. 15 total hunters 28 total tags 25 total kills 2 missed shots 1 Jake was killed & tagged by accident. all other birds were Toms Best bird scored 74+ nwtf longest spurs 1 3/8" heaviest bird 26lb 4oz longest beard 10 1/2" |
Spring 2019 was another highly successful season.
10 total hunters 100% success with their 1st tag 70% filled their 2nd. Spring of 2020 will bring changes to the Ks Turkey units. The state currently plans to limit unit 3, 5, & 6 too 1 tag per person.. unit 2.. which is where i do most of my hunting will remain a 2 bird limit. I have 1 property with over 300 birds.. several other properties where i am seeing and hearing birds. |
You got allot of birds running around!
-Jake |
I see you shoot a 10 gauge. What ammo do you use and where do you order it? None of my local shops carry 10 gauge turkey loads.
